Anyone have experience with back pain or sciatica?

I had sciatica with all 3 pregnancies that went away right after delivery. Annoying but not a huge deal.

Two weeks ago I was sitting at work not doing anything strenuous and my leg started throbbing. I flexed my foot and pain radiated throughout my body. By the end of the day the pain ended up settling in my lower back and pretty much shoots down my leg the entire day. It is most painful while sitting. I've been icing my lower back, doing some stretches, and laying on a sacro wedgie (lol) but nothing is helping and it is way worse than it was with pregnancy. Ibuprofen takes the edge off, so I take 4 of those a few times a day. I'm trying to take it easy, but been pretty much single mothering it lately with my H's own surgery/injury.

Anyway, I should probably call my GP, but wondering if anyone else has dealt with this and if anything helps? Also, if you do go to a doc, can they really do much for you besides send you to physical therapy? It is painful, but I'm still able to function so I might wait it out another week.

  • I've had similar pain a couple times and both times it ended up being muscle spasms. Once was several years ago, and my doc suggested Robaxacet (which worked). More recently it was shortly after having DS - I guess I was repeatedly lifting him wrong and causing something to get inflamed. Went to the chiro for it and that worked as well.

  • I had it.  I had an MRI that showed a herniated disc.  I went to physical therapy, did the exercises they told me to, and it went away.

Mine was worse when I was sitting for a long time too.  I did better when I did some exercise.

  • I went to a chiro and she fixed it right up.
  • If you look up Sukie Baxter on YouTube she has a really awesome stretch that provides fairly instantaneous sciatica relief (albeit short lived). I went to a chiro and it resolved the issue. When it flares up I go for adjustments twice a week for 3-4 weeks or so and it's gone.

  • I had sciatica issues too.  I started seeing a Chiropractor and I haven't had the issue since.  Physical therapy never fixed the problem long-term since the discs weren't being put back  into proper position.
