Save me

Found out Sunday that DH has pleurisy, so MIL decided that I couldn't possibly handle my kids and him. I tried to tell her we would be fine but she didn't listen. She came over early this afternoon AND SHE'S STILL HERE.

She keeps trying to take over everything. She got irritated when I took Nicky back to give him a bottle, she decided it was time for Em to get a bath and kept trying to take Em's clothes off so that she could be the one to bathe her, then stood there while I bathed Em and she kept correcting her/telling her what to do, etc.

I just kept trying to find excuses to be elsewhere but by bath time I'd had it with her trying to make herself into the parent. Now Em is in her crib fighting sleep because she knows grandma is still here and because her night time routine was thrown off.

How do you get unwelcome guests to leave? Especially when they think they are doing you a favor and you need to keep the peace?

Re: Save me

  • I leave. Seriously, my mil hangs around way too long after I get home from class, so I take Coop on errands and make them sound crazy important and time sensitive.
Don't think that technique will work for your situation ;) Good Luck!

  • Yea I would leave. I would load up the car and tell her you are going to some family members house for dinner or to watch your favorite show or anything!!

  • I *finally* got Em to sleep around 10:45 and she left at 11. She kept hinting that she wanted to come back tomorrow but I ignored it. If she shows up tomorrow, I'm going to go run errands (thanks for the idea @vanessaLC‌). Maybe I'll buy some scandalous pj's!

If it was me and my MIL and she comes over again today, I'd tell her "thanks for coming! can you keep an eye on LO while I take a quick shower??" and then spend at least an hour showering and dressing and drying my hair. If she wants to help so bad, take a break and make her really help :-D

I actually did do that yesterday! My Husband ended up having to get the baby's bottle and bounce him, so it wasn't the best idea on my part. So far not a peep from MIL, so FX she stays away!
