Flying and Renting a car seat???

Flying to Texas in May... Do we rent a car seat for LO threw the rental car place or lug our big stroller and car seat threw the airport and risk it getting damaged and dirty on the plane and having to buy a whole new stroller car seat combo? Also any tips for flying with a 4 month old would be nice.

Thanks

We flew to Texas in December with a 5 month old. We brought our car seat/stroller with and gate checked it. I would recommend buying a cheap bag to put them in, like the JL Childress Gate Check Bag, to prevent them from getting dirty. We didn't bring the base for the car seat with, however if I had to do it again I would bring it. We had a direct flight so it wasn't a big deal gate checking it and we had no issue with anything breaking.

As far as flying with a 4 month old, if you nurse, do it on take off and landing. I did that both ways and we had no trouble at all with his ears. He managed to poop both ways and if I ever have to change a diaper on a plane again I will try to do it either in the seat or in the back by where the flight attendance sit, I would put the changing pad on the floor. It was crazy trying to change him in the bathroom, especially when we hit a bit of turbulence! Good Luck!

If you use an infant seat I would look for a snap and go on Craig's list for the trip, that way if it does get ruined your not without your good stroller at home. They are usually around $10-$20. I would also get a gate check bag to keep it clean. I would also try and see if you can get an extra seat on the flight, and use the car seat on the plane.

    Hi,

Flown many a times with my daughter. Younger was easier. Get a direct flight it's easier to plan around meal times. Feed or get her to suck going up and down to avoid ear issues.

Stroller wise, I suggest a sturdy umbrella stroller. One its big enough for storage underneath, comfy for kido, and fits through small spaces easily. Not to mention you can push it with one hand easily. I have a Maclaren and I love it. I check it right before boarding n grab it as I get off the plane.

Car seat, hands down BRING yours! I am a safety nut. The rental company employees toss those things around so much. I question the safety of them. Think about it. My husband was rear ended and had minor damage n we felt nothing when we were hit. However, our ins agent sliced our car seat & said replace it as its a safety issue and cut us a check for a new one on the spot. It's a little more inconvient yes but, you can't put a price tag on your baby's safety. Not to mention bringing your own also means you have one n don't risk the rental company not having one.

Good luck! Have a fun trip!
