Fetal Doppler HB Accuracy?

For those who have a home doppler.. I have a Sonoline B and maybe I have a dud, but it doesn't seem that my baby's HB is accurate. The BPM is all over the place! One second it is in the 120's the next 160's then drops to the 100's. I have had several ultrasounds and they all show baby's HB is between 160-170. I have recorded the HB and counted the beats but I just really wish I could get an accurate reading on the doppler. Has anyone else had this problem? Thanks in advance ladies!

  • Mine is a little weird too. I have the same one as you. It doesn't fluctuate THAT bad, but mine goes from 115 to 150 and back down again. It like constantly re-calculates itself before i can get a steady heartbeat reading. I just figure baby starts moving around because of it so the heartbeat goes up. Not really sure though!  :-S

  • They're not right. Enjoy listening, but don't put too much stock in the numbers. (I imagine if you spent a butt load of cash on one... It would be closer to right. I spent only 100$.)
  • I have heard that the BPM is notoriously wrong on these. I have the same one and mine does it too. It usually gets to the mid 150's to 160 and then drops off again but it sounds the same to me.

  • Thanks ladies!!! I really appreciate your input. I will count on my own from now on. I only payed 55 bucks on Ebay (from a medical supply co) so that could be another reason it is not working right.
How often do you use your doppler? I try not to use it everyday but my OB and nurse said there is no harm. I just love to listen!
  • I am 15 weeks and my doppler has been pretty close. The last 2 times I have been to the OB, babies HB has been 150 and 154. My doppler always picks it up between 147ish and 155ish.

  • Mine is very accurate. The 120 you're hearing is your artery. The 100 (usually closer to 80-90) is your own heartbeat. Baby's heartbeat is unmistakable when you hear it. Though the doppler may not be able to pick it up enough for the numerical reading due to all the other sounds in there, especially after eating, it's still accurate when you get the right angle and position on baby. Watch a YouTube video on it. You clearly need a bit of education on the use.

  • I also have a sonoline b. The heart rate on the screen is never accurate.

  • Thanks again! I know for 100% sure I am hearing the baby's HB and not my artery. It is a galloping horse like sound. Very unmistakeable. Just for the heck of it, I counted the beats and watched the screen and it was very different. I think I really did get the dud! As long as I can hear the little bean then I am good :)
  • I am using a friends sonoline b and the numbers on the screen jump all over the place. I am 23 weeks. I also just realized I seem to use it just after eating (must be when I think I have time?!). Anyhow, it might be all over the place because baby is all over the place since I just ate.  I am going to count for myself next time and compare it to what the screen shows.
