For those using (or have used) a doula

I was thinking of buying ours a gift.  She's been everything I hoped for in terms of offering calm support so far and I'm very thankful that we chose to have her with us during L&D.   Is a gift appropriate?  Any suggestions?

  • I haven't really given it much thought, but I like the idea of giving her a little something. I'll probably wait until afterward though.

  • I've thought about it but I don't know. I may just give her a tip or a gift card with a thank you note.

  • I would think a thank you card and maybe a picture of the baby with some small momento would be appropriate. I had not really thought about it honestly.

I just signed our contract this week with a team of 2 doulas who have a fairly new business,  assuming I'm happy in the end then my plan was to write a testimonial that they can put online, and offer to be a client reference. Being married to a small business owner that's just my preferred way to say thanks.  But I'm sure a gift would be appreciated. If I were to do an actual gift I'd probably go with a restaurant gift card.

Sending a baby announcement and a card of how much she helped your birthing is a fab idea- u can always send a Starbucks gift card... Doulas keep odd hours :)

I just finished stressing over my hostess gifts and started the process of stressing over my MW gift. Did not even cross my mind to get my doula something (besides her $800 fee) but I suppose that'd be a nice touch given the personal nature of the job.. Very few of my service providers get to get up close & personal with my vag.
  • I have my doula (who was pregnant at the time) a gift card for a message & wrote down the names of those who did prenatals at that location. I have relieved myself a gift card to outback :) and an offer to pay for my ticket to the BWF conference coming to town but I had already paid. I don't expect gifts but do greatly appreciate the ones I've gotten. I keep the cards I get too.

I didn't get our doula for our DS a gift, but I didn't end up very pleased w her after his birth.
This time, we have a doula in training who has already gone above and beyond. I'm planning on a gift card of some kind for her since she isn't charging us. I also like the idea of writing a testimonial!
