Timeline for first timer - Registering, Shower, Nursery, etc??

Hello MoMs! 12 weeks pregnant this week with twins. The "unknown" of bedrest, and when I will deliver (and everything else!) has me wondering when I should begin to do our homework for registering, when should we plan for nursery to be finished, when should we plan a baby shower, etc? Is there a timeline I should start to plan for? Thank you!!

Re: Timeline for first timer - Registering, Shower, Nursery, etc??

  • We are having our shower at 27weeks, we finished our registry at 20 weeks and we plan to have everything shopped for and set up by week 32 :) that will give us 5 weeks of relaxing before they get here!
  • Loading the player...
  • We are 11w5d today and have started our registry, as well as buying things that are great deals...

I don't know what will happen with the shower (we haven't received an offer to host it yet) but if we can I would prefer that it be before 30 weeks for sure. Ideally sometime in July. That said, I really don't think my family appreciates/understands how little I will be able to travel after 28 weeks.... Making them understand this might actually be key to a potential shower happening earlier.... Hopefully your family gets it!

I am figuring I will "supervise" any setup in late summer or early fall, but we are already working on cleaning out the babies' room now and talking about decor and gear. I have largely handed that over to my partner-love though.

  • We created our registry when I was 19 weeks. I had my shower when I was 30 weeks. And the nursery was done when I was 33 weeks. The nursery would have been done sooner, however, my DH always got called into work on his days off so the process was slowed down greatly. I was fortunate enough to have a smooth pregnancy that did not require bed rest and I carried the boys until 37 weeks 5 days (1 day shy of my induction date). I did get a little stressed at one point that the room wouldn't be done and their stuff wouldn't be put away  by the time they arrived. Honestly, I wish their room was done before the shower because the baby shower gifts camped out in the living room for three weeks and boy was it a cluttered mess.

  • From previous posts I read along this line, most of us recommend having things settled and ready by 30 weeks.  I just turned 30 weeks a few days ago, had my shower on Saturday (although I wish it had been a few weeks earlier) and now we're still finishing putting everything away and organizing everything.  But it's getting harder for me, I'm getting bigger and a little uncomfortable trying to do too much at once.  I think I started my registry around 16 weeks or so, just so I had time to research what all I wanted/needed, etc.

  • Err on the side of earlier, just to be safe. ;)

We completed our registry the minute we knew whether we were expecting boys or girls (or both!). During the couple of months prior, we completed all of the gender-neutral items.

My shower was just shy of 26w. I was placed on MBR two DAYS after my shower (I had already been pulled off of anything but sitting on my butt at work or on the couch at night at 22w). I was in the hospital at 28w.

Many women get to 30w and feel great and have no issues. Many others don't. The longer you wait, the larger risk you're taking that you may either miss your shower and/or be having it from your couch or hospital bed.

  • I know that I'm a different case, but I was put on a modified bed rest at 20 weeks.  So at this point, I can go to work but when I get home I have to be laying on the couch.  They're saying strict bed rest/hospital bed rest at 24 weeks (depending on their growth at that time).  I had a work shower, MIL shower, and my mom's shower already planned.  They had to move all of them up to this month while I lay there!  :(  They're planning on taking my babies at 28 weeks because their growth discrepancy is so large and they're mono/di.

Luckily, I had a feeling that this could happen and we had already started the nursery.  It's pretty much completed now (just needs the extras from showers added to it).

I would just say as a MoM, be prepared for ANYTHING.  Try not to let it catch you off guard if you need to rest for your babies.  And if you're able to stay on your feet til the end, be extra excited!  Either way, even if your babies ended up coming very early, you'll have time at home before them to get everything together.

  • I tell all multiple mamas-to-be to have as much as humanly possible done by 28 weeks.

  • I'm 20 weeks tomorrow and we registered already, have painted and cleaned the carpet in the babies room and ordered furniture. My shower will be at 30 weeks, unless something happens... I've just tried to get everything I can done while I'm still small enough to do so!
  • My MFM told me to get anything that I can't delegate or do from the couch done before 28 weeks. Though we are hopeful that this is a worst case scenario, we are in full preparation mode already at 13 weeks, getting whatever we can done as quickly as possible. DS's big boy room is about 75% done, then I will start altering the nursery (only slightly, it is gender neutral). We are trying to purge/organize our house room by room. I feel a lot of pressure to get stuff done, just in case we have less time than we are hoping.

  • I have had an easy, uncomplicated twin pregnancy (knock on wood), but even with that at 30 weeks I am feeling the wall quickly approaching!

After morning sickness left me around 18 weeks we hustled to get the future nursery cleared out, extra crap donated, things packed away, etc. This took quite a bit of time and I'm glad we started earlier rather than later!

I started the registry early and had it done around 24 weeks.

M work shower around 24/25 weeks which was perfect because I still felt really good. My family shower was 27/28 weeks and I was pretty tired for that one. I don't know if it was because there were tons of people or something, but that one wore me out. Maternity pics we did at 26 weeks which I am SO GLAD we did because after that is when I started getting swollen and tired and feeling more and more like crap haha.

I had wanted to get everything done by 28 weeks but it's looking more like 32 weeks will be the goal now. I have everything they need, just need to do registry returns/exchanges and organize/decorate the nursery. I just finished painting it so I'm getting close!

Like @pinkmickey24 I wish I had their room ready before the shower... our shower gifts took over the sunroom the past couple weeks!

  • Have everything done by 30 weeks. Even if you have an uncomplicated pregnancy you will be super uncomfortable by then so it will be nice to rest. We started our registry at 15 weeks, had the shower at 29 weeks and had the nursery totally done by 30 weeks.

  • I started researching for my registry/building it online when I was maybe 13-14w, had it finished by 20w, had showers at 26w and 29w (I recommend having them by 28w) and I agree with trying to have everything done, set up and ready by 30-32w ideally.
