Trouble TTC

Book suggestions

Anyone have a good book suggestion?  I'm reading "When Heavy Arms Become a Heavy Burden" by Glahn and Cutrer right now.  I'm about halfway through and it's great at addressing the emotional side of infertility.  It also has a good chapter on dealing with your doctor.  I'd love to find a book geared toward people who already have some medical knowledge.  A book that explains diagnoses and treatment in detail, maybe even a textbook.  Sorry if this is a repeat question.
Me: 29, DH: 31
TTC since May 2012, married since 7-08-06
Me: irregular cycles, possible endo
DH: bilateral varicoceles (surgically corrected on 12-13-13)
Treatment: 3 cycles of Clomid alone, 2 cycles with Clomid and IUI
HSG Feb. 14:  all clear
1st appointment with RE 3-20-14
2nd appt with RE: normal postcoital test, u/s showed a large follicle the day after I got a positive OPK, most likely problem is endo :(
2nd HSG May 14: My RE used a dye that is supposed to help calm down inflammation from endo

Re: Book suggestions

  • I just finished reading "Unsung Lullabies" but I'm not sure it's really what you are looking for.  It is by 3 doctors who struggled in IF themselves, and they use a lot of examples of couples to explain the many emotions and experiences you go through.  No real medical information in it.

Not sure if that helps...but thank you for  your suggestion.  I am really struggling with the emotional side right now, and think I may try that book you mentioned.

  • Thanks for the ideas.  Mostly I want to learn more about endometriosis.  My RE thinks there's a good possibility I have it.  I'm amazed that I could have endo and not have any idea until now.  Plus, my tubes are clear (per my HSG).  I want a better understanding of how endo causes infertility even if your tubes are unaffected.  I've read a little on the internet about how the inflammation from endo causes problems.

This is me - I had no idea I had Endo until my Lap a couple weeks ago.  My RE didn't find too much (according to my DH), but he still found some and believes that's our root cause.

Feb. 24, 2014 - HSG scheduled;  DX:  one tube definitely open & one tube could be blocked
Mar. 7, 2014 - CD 21 Blood work for Progesterone; DX:  Progesterone level at 5.2; shows I ovulated but was low
Mar. 28, 2014 - Laparoscopy; DX:  Tubes open.  Found some endometriosis and had that removed.

That is not how I read it, I read it as great things I can add to my fertilty treatment to get me pregnant.
No amount of acupunture and herbs is going to get me pregnant without a drs help but it if it can help boost my chances I am all for it.

  • Thanks for posting this OP, I always like finding new books about this struggle and find it to be a source of comfort in a way.

Trying to have baby #1 since April 2013

DH SA March,May 2014 - Low motility and shape issues. On vitamins per RE to help

Me testing April 3, 2014 - FSH and LH good, HSG showed blocked right tube

April 29, 2014 - First RE appt., right tube needs to be removed and possibly left also if

it's bad too. RE suggests going straight to IVF

June 4, 2014 - LAP/HSC and unexpected endo. removed but tubes got to stay!

June 13, 2014 - Post-Op appointment. We decide where to go next since main issue

is MFI influenced. Trying naturally until decision... Repeat SA  in September. Aiming for IUI #1 November 2014.
