Babysitters, taxes, (and a hamster gif)

I know nothing of this, so people with a clue help me out.

1. I'm looking to hire a babysitter to come to our house regularly for 2-3 hours, once a week. I know a nanny is treated as an employee (Taking out taxes and all that jazz), but I'm not sure if what we're planning to do falls into that category as well - or if I just call it weekly babysitting, cut them a check and we're good. Anyone have an idea, or ever do something similar?

Thanks in advance.

Here's the hamster.

  • I would consider that a babysitter and not a nanny. I think of a nanny job as more like a full-time job.

  • Quick googly/ threshold inquiry is amount paid to any person, regardless of how often or consistent they work. The amount for 2014 is $1800 or $1900.

    Excellent, thanks :)

  • Does paypal withhold? Care.com apparently does the withholding and a lot of the paperwork....no first hand experience
  • Not quite the same deal, but we have a dogwalker who comes twice a week - we just pay her without withholding anything and it's about fifty bucks a week.  I'm pretty sure she does her own taxes as a self-employed individual.

  • We use (or will be...) Intuit Household Payroll. It does all of the calculations, payments, tax forms, etc for you. Just had to create a federal employer number, state account number, and then anything specific you need to do for your state, it tells you and gives you the links too...
