S/O Jar food

I know making your own baby food is less expensive and healthier, but if I'm being honest, I can barely drag my ass out of bed each day for work, let alone cook dinner. So I'm pretty sure I'll be doing jarred food instead of homemade purees. Anyone else? What brands are you planning to use? Should I know about anything other than Gerber?

Re: S/O Jar food

  • I want to make my own food but I am not opposed to buying it as well.  I am going to go with Earth's Best organic food if I do.

I'm glad you posted this, I'm going to follow as I want to know as well.  I have started with fresh avocado and banana and plan on doing sweet potatoes next.

    Edited because I wasn't done
  • I have been using Earth's Best for rice cereal, but I don't think my Target had any jarred foods by them. I'll have to be on the lookout!

  • I'm making my own but in a pinch ill use jarred. Just check the ingredients. Some of the organics actually have more than the non organics. I forget which brand but the regular only has water and the fruit/vegetable. The organic has that and like 7 other things in it.

They have the jarred foods at our BRU.
  • We won't use Gerber since they switched to non-recyclable plastic containers instead of glass jars. We plan to make our own, but if we need to buy, we'll go with Earth's Best or another brand that still uses glass (Beech Nut does, I think, and some store brands).

They have Gerber in glass jars at my Target. I love those glass jars.

  • I'm going to attempt to do all organic for at least the first year if his life. So far I have bought some different Earth's Best jars of food just so I can taste and see the texture and see what he likes. Then I purée my own using organic fruits and veggies. I have been mixing the fruits with Earth's Best oatmeal and breastmilk or serving alone too. It's definitely saving $ especially if you freeze. I can get like 4, maybe 5 jars worth out of one sweet potato. Or one bag of organic peas today made 12 freezer cubes and I still put some in the fridge for the next 2 days too. Earths Best is .99 cents per jar unless it is on sale.
  • We plan on making the majority of it on our own, but will keep jars of Earth's Best on hand for in the diaper bag and lazy days. I got a good deal on it a couple weeks ago at BRU. It was 2 12 packs for $16. Not too bad.

Haven't started yet but I have used Gerber, Beech Nut, and Walmart's brand in the past.

We are doing a combo of organic jarred food (mainly Earth's Best) and making our own.

  • Well...A is using Gerber formula. I don't like Gerber and would prefer to boycott their products; DH is not on board with that. We'll see what happens but most likely once we are done with FF we will be done with Gerber also.

I'll make the majority of our baby food at home. I understand it seems like just one more thing to do when we are all so short on free time, but I can manage to do it in a short amount of time on the weekends when I'm doing other work in the kitchen.

  • I have yet to start shopping around for baby food, but I am leaning toward Gerber. If I can find a cheaper brand without a bunch of extra stuff in it I will go for that.

I am in the same boat with wondering how I would find the time to make my own food.

  • The other day I saw Beech Nut at the store and it was a new kind of jar so I looked closer at it and saw that it's 100% natural and each kind is called what it is.... Just Squash, Just Pears, etc.  The only thing in it is the fruit or vegetable.   We haven't started solids yet, but I got a couple of these because they looked good.  And they were on sale.

With DD we used Gerber.  We used the glass jars and the plastic tubs.

I think everyone's strapped for time, but you don't have to make it fresh every time LO eats.  You can steam and puree a bunch on weekends (or even just make a little extra when you're making your veggies for your dinner each day) and freeze, then just thaw cubes as needed.  That's our plan (but we're not starting til 6 months at the recommendation of our pedi).

Weird question...how do you keep them in the freezer as single servings? Do you just thaw in the microwave or do you take out what you want for the following day and defrost in the fridge? So many questions.....

Since they're in ice cube trays, just thaw the number if cubes you're going to be using within the next day or two.

  • Once they're frozen, i pop them out of the ice cube trays and store in freezer bags. Then the night before, I take out however many cubes I'll use the next day to defrost.
