Is it weird?

Is it weird that my Dr. Doesn't do growth scans? He said IV had a heathly pregnancy and he doesn't see the need to. But I know a ton of women who have had healthy pregnancy and the doctor gave them an estimate on baby. Im not really worried about how big or small my baby is but I was more worried about him being turned the wrong way. The doctor said he was head down weeks ago but he felt by hand? How is that possible? This seems odd to me and I feel like I should be asking more questions... Yah? Nah? I guess I'm just starting to over analyze cus it's getting so close.

  • No, that's pretty standard in a lot of places. The majority of people don't get any more scans after the anatomy scan unless there is a reason to be concerned.

  • As for the how to tell by hand, it's really not that hard, especially if they're professionals.

My OB squeezes the lumpy ends. One is the butt, one is the head. So far, all he's done is squeeze but in order to confirm which end is which, he will probably give one end a wiggle and see how baby responds. I have heard of midwives doing the same thing. Whole body response = butt (because the baby can't move his/her butt without moving everything else). Isolated response = head.

  • After the anatomy scan I never received anymore scans.  My midwife checks the baby's position by locating the two ends the stiff end that won't wiggle when she tries to manipulate it is the butt the end that can wiggle a bit like a bobble head is well the head.  She also asks me where I feel most of the movement.  So in my case I feel a lot of kicks and rolls on my left so she knows the baby is positioned more to the right side of my uterus with his head down, butt up and back along the right.

Unless there's an emergency or real need for it no more U/S.  Which is fine and makes sense to me.
  • We don't do any u/s after the anatomy (unless there is some medical reason).

  • I don't think it's weird. I had one at 28 weeks only because I was measuring ahead. They've kept an eye on me and said as long as I'm consistent, no need for another. If I wasn't measuring ahead I wouldn't have had one.

There really is no need for a growth scan unless something comes up that your Dr feels warrants one. Your Dr is a professional, and for how far along all May moms should be, even a less trained hand should be able to distinguish between body parts to determine what position baby is in. No need to worry :)

Yep. A trained professional is better & more accurate than an u/s at this point for determining weight. And it's not hard at all to figure out head vs butt. We covered it in RN school in about 15 minutes of lecture & all taking a turn with a pregnant mom.

  • At my MWs practice it is not standard to do any other u/s after the a/s unless there is a problem. I'm measuring 6 weeks ahead by fundal height so I got one at 34 weeks for a suspected fluid/large baby issue. They will follow up at 39 weeks if I don't go on my own before that due to a possible size issue (LO is a chunker). I also got to do another GD test because his belly is proportionally large. They knew by feeling him he was head down and the u/s confirmed it. I wish I wasn't getting so much attention.
  • Normal. I didn't have an ultrasound after my 20 week anatomy scan with DD (I did do an elective at 29 weeks). This time, I am getting one on Thursday, but it was kind of unexpected, they are trying to figure out when to induce me (for medical reasons, not just based on size). My doctors have always been able to just feel and tell me the baby's position.

  • Like PPs said, totally normal. I never had a growth scan with DD... No scan after the anatomy scan at 20 w. My OB could feel her head down int pelvis. For the record, they come in and do a quick scan in the hospital before you deliver to make sure baby is head down if you're attempting a vaginal delivery.
  • Alright cool. Sign of relief. Thanks ladies. I need to stop worrying so much. I feel clueless sometimes. I'm not gonna lie tho if it wasn't for you ladies throughout this whole pregnancy I wouldn't know half the stuff I know now. Thank you all!
  • Normal! Lately a lot of woman prefer not to get one because they can be very off +/- some lbs.

    It's a BOY

  • Yep, my last "given" scan was the anatomy scan at 20wks. I had an elective 3d ultrasound at 28wks, which we paid for ourselves. I'm measuring slightly behind but not enough to warrant a growth scan. I'd be grateful that I'm not being put forward for a growth scan, as its usually an indication that the dr wants to keep an eye on your pregnancy because its not within the normal ranges. That's not something you want to be worried about at the moment.

  • I never had an u/s with my son after the 20 week. I had one at 32 weeks this time only because they are recommending them if you're over 35.

This exactly I learned how to determine in RN school as well. I'm no pro but I'm sure any ob and midwife as well as any rn working on a mat floor could easily tell you where baby is positioned :) no worries!

  • Isn't it normal to not have a growth scan?!
My last ultrasound was at 20 weeks. The dr has told me the baby is head down for weeks now, also. She just felt by hand and that's all we need to know.

This as well. She measures my fundal height as well.

    That's exactly what we're saying.
