Finger food issues

LO is still having issues with finger foods that aren't bread-like. He will eat blueberry pancakes, grilled cheese, teething biscuits, and Cheerios. However, he still refuses all vegetables and fruits, even though he loves them as purees. He also won't really eat pieces of meat or cheese (unless it's part of a grilled cheese sandwich.) We have already tried coating the fruit and veggies in Cheerio dust and tried cutting it up into different shapes and sizes, but no luck yet. Any other suggestions for getting him to eat fruits, veggies, and the like as finger food? Or any suggestions for other bread-like finger foods to try? (Waffles won't work until we get a waffle iron.)

@CL8badB‌ and @EmAzeem‌ We have tried feeding it directly to him and that worked the first time or two. But now he just clamps his mouth tight when we try that.

@EmAzeem‌ He literally will refuse fruits and veggies if that is all we put on his plate and just cry and whine. We still try, but we have also been making some finger foods we know he will eat too because he needs the practice. We have been making his purees chunkier too; he eats those no problem, but it unfortunately isn't translating to finger foods. He will eat almost anything as a puree, just not as finger foods.

Thanks for the ideas, ladies! Keep them coming if anyone has others. :-)

  • Sweet potatoes are kind of bread-like if you slice them right? You could probably roast them and zucchini cut like whatever bread he likes and melt cheese on top? Like a vegetable grilled cheese

  • We were/are in the same boat.  We are still mostly on purees but over the last week or so he has all of a sudden gotten a lot better at feeding himself things.

Also I think it helps if he sees the food literally came directly from my plate/fork and onto his tray.  Because if I'm eating it that shit must be good!

  • What about beans? DD loves them. I cook them so they are soft and mushy. Fish is also something she will eat. I put some on the tray, put a little piece on her mouth so she can test the taste, then let her feed herself.

Don't be afraid to use what he likes and hide other stuff in it.  Has he tried mac & cheese?  You can put lots of veggies in that.  Other pasta?  Puree a ton of veggies into your sauce.  Make him a quesadilla with veggies and meat in it.  Pancakes/waffles with fruit inside, veggie/fruit muffins.  At this point I'd worry less about HOW he's eating the stuff than that he's getting it in him.  Fruits and veggies and soft, squishy and sometimes slimy so a lot of times it's a straight up texture issue that they might outgrow.  If he keeps it up you can mention it to the doctor but for now I'd just try to tweak what you know he likes.
We have already been doing fruit in the pancakes, but I love the idea of the quesadillas and veggie/fruit muffins.  I'm not sure how the pasta will go over; I think we will try that this week.

  • What about dried fruit or veggies? They're not as slimy or slippery as fresh and for a little while it was easier for L to get those to his mouth .
