Ketchup

Ok, this is a weird question, but I'm up late coughing, so -

Do you limit how much ketchup you let your kid eat? This morning DS wouldn't eat his breakfast (a sausage, egg, and cheese biscuit and some veggies), and I thought he might like dipping it in ketchup, so I brought him a few tablespoons in a bowl. He ate the whole bowl with a spoon and then picked it up and said, "Gone!" Then I got him another little bit, demonstrated dipping things in it, but he still ate the whole bowl with a spoon and then wanted more.

I know you can buy HFCS-free ketchup, but it's still high in sugar, so I'm still curious if I should limit how much DS eats.

Re: Ketchup

  • I offer a second helping and tell DD that's the last she'll get. I wouldn't worry too much.

  • The is what my DD does. We always hide the ketchup when we go out because all she wants to do is eat it. She usually is only allowed 2 helpings. So yes I guess we limit it.

  • We don't limit.  When he 1st started he would have ketchup with a side of chicken nugget or fish stick.  The food was basically a tool for getting the ketchup into his mouth.  Now, he is much better at self regulating.

His father puts ketchup on EVERYTHING though, so he learned from example.

  • You could always try to make your own ketchup. I've seen crockpot recipes for it. That way you can cut down the sugar.  I don't offer ketchup but my son loves anything with tomatoes in it. Maybe try salsa or spaghetti sauce for a condiment?

Don't give him a spoon. He doesn't need a spoon to eat a biscuit.

He also had tabouli, and that's harder to eat with a fork.
  • My kids are the same way with ranch...they would dip pretty much everything in ranch if I let them! I just give them a limited amount. They'll get a small serving, and if they want more then I usually give them a 2nd smaller serving - and then that's it. They would probably be thrilled if I gave them bowls of ranch and spoons and let them go to town. ;)  lol

  • Ranch addictions are plentiful in this house. I myself dump vast quantities of it on my salads (thus killing any nutritious value whatsoever). I just couldn't eat spoonfuls of it. My kids? Forget spoonsful, they could probably eat ladlesfull
    ;)

  • My kids had a phase like that. They'd eat all of the dipping sauce alone and then want more to use on the intended food. I'd give another serving as long as started eating the other food. It passed and I didn't really care.

  • Yup, I limit it, but she gets two rounds, and I try not to be stingy.
I treat it like many other things with sugar - she can have some, but she can't have a lot.
But we generally have a "no repeats" rule in the house - which I follow myself as much as I expect her to follow it - so it fits in with the approach she's used to.

  • It took my son a while to figure out the dipping thing.  We only gave him ketchup, ranch, etc... when we are also "dipping" so he could see the behavior and model it.  But he got a limited amount and once it was gone, that was it, all gone.  No seconds on condiments.

He's gotten good at it now, and we can give it to him even when we aren't using it.  But we still have to watch and remind him sometimes to eat the actual food being dipped :-)

  • When he starts "dipping" his empty fork or his fingers in the ketchup, it gets taken away for a few minutes while he eats 2-3 more ketchup-free bites.  If he does it again, food becomes pre-dipped and access gets revoked.

  • My kid loves ketchup. She'll dip her fruit in ketchup (gross). I'll only give a second helping if she's actually putting it on the food she's eating, not just eating it straight. So I limit it straight up, but not as a condiment.

  • I don't limit, mainly because DS is tiny and doesn't eat much unless he has some ketchup or ranch to dip his food in.

  • Jump on her couch too.
  • Damn, you guys are serious about your ketchup access. NO KETCHUP FOR YOU!
  • I can't believe that giving fucks about ketchup is a thing...

  • I probably would not let my kid just eat ketchup with a spoon either, but I do find it hilarious that there are so many strong feelings about it!

  • Is this where I say we encourage DD to use a spoon/fork/french fries/really anything to eat her ketchup because if we didn't she would just eat it by the handful.

Which is why you dedicated 2 responses to calling me out personally? I don't even get this. Ketchup I don't take personally and don't know why you would think so. Being called out personally, twice plus an added FFS, I do. I don't know WTF I did wrong here so I'm just gonna back out now.

Again, I was kidding, Fred. I wasn't trying to call you out.

This is DS.  No spoon?  No problem.

I once dated a guy who put ketchup on steak, and I judged him for it. I should have revoked his ketchup privileges.
  • My FIL uses ketchup on everything. I've seen him put it on spaghetti. It's basically automatic divorce if my MIL lets the ketchup supply at the house run out.

Add me to the I don't give a fuck if you put ketchup on everything or your kid drinks it with a straw.
I have this mental picture of one of my kids sitting there with a tall glass of ketchup slurping it down like a milkshake. Because they would totally do that. ;)

  • I'd eat maple syrup on pizza. It doesn't sound half bad.

DH is the ketchup fiend around here, I don't care for it. Obviously we don't have to worry about DS yet, but I probably won't limit it unless he just eats half a bottle at a time or something. But what do I know about it yet lol
