GBS+ Come on in

Got my results from my swab Friday and found out I was GBS+. Since I know 25% of us probably are I'm just wondering who else is in the club? All I know is if the water breaks get into the hospital and they will keep us for 48 hour minimum post-birth plus antibiotics during birth. Doesn't sound too terrible but I'm glad to know so we can deal with it ahead of time.

Re: GBS+ Come on in

  • I've been GBS+ since 14 weeks because it showed up in a routine urine culture. I wasn't having any UTI symptoms so they didn't treat it. Did another urine culture at 24 weeks and it was gone. However, if GBS is found in your urine at any time you are considered "highly colonized," so I'll still get the antibiotics at birth.

  • How long does it usually take to get the results back from a GBS test? My midwfie won't do it until I am 36-37 weeks.

Takes about a week in my OBs office. I didn't get mine back yet (was swabbed on Thursday).

I got my results back within 3 days. They tested me at 34w6d because I've been having other issues so they went ahead and did mine early.
  • I was with my daughter and got the antibiotics during labor.  will have my swab next week.

  • Just had my vagass swab today. What a delightful experience haha. My husband took it like a champ. Haha. I forgot to ask how long id have to wait for the results.

  • I had the abx with my son and tested positive early on this time too, so I don't need the swab - they'll just give me the abx. However, because this baby is breech I may have a c section - anyone know if you still get abx if it's not a vaginal birth?

  • I was + with DS and I am with this one, too. My OB tests urine early in the pregnancy, so I've known for awhile. The antibiotics are nothing you notice, since they come through the IV. As far as my OB is concerned, I just need to make sure I mention it as soon as I get to the hospital so they can begin the meds right away.

  • They found out I was + for it during a test for a UTI at 26 weeks. Like PP said, my doctor told me I just need to mention it immediately when we go to L&D. I am by no means happy about having it but I guess the upside is not needing to get swabbed next week, I've heard that isn't pleasant.

I've had a cesarean with each kid, and as far as I can recall, I've never had the gbs test. From what you guys are describing, I feel like it's something I would remember.

  • I have been + with my two previous pregnancies, it just required antibiotics during labor, no additional stay.

I have my swab in two weeks for this pregnancy.

You get antibiotics before a C-Section automatically so if you are a planned C/S they won't swab you.

  • I was GBS positive last time but I had a c/s cause ds was breech. Our hospital policy is antibiotics during the c/s. We like our moms to be treated at least 4 hours before delivery. If not baby will get labs drawn at 6 hours of life.

My friend freaked when she found out she was GBS +, I had to calm her down and I told her most people are. She was more relaxed after I talked with her.

  • I totally forgot my swab is tomorrow.

At our hospital, you are gbs+, it is a 48hr stay.

Been on probiotics for two weeks. Let's see if that's enough to make a difference.

  • Found out today I am. I was hoping to not have to be hooked up to anything but I guess I can just drag the IV around with me?
I was not GBS+ with my other pregnancies.

@SMM1986- You should be able to just have a heplock and they will insert the meds as needed!

  • Okay thank you!

  • So stupid, but I'm actually legitimately upset that I'm GBS+ with this pregnancy. I know i is not that big of a deal (probably no deal at all), but I don't want an IV and I don't want to have to have two doses of an abx if I want out of the hospital within 24 hours.

I know it is up to the pediatrician at the hospital that I'll be delivering at that they may still let me and LO out if I only receive one dose as long as LO looks good. But I don't want to be stuck there; I want to go home to be with my husband and son.

I know there are worse things in the world than this, worse things to be upset about. But here I am, sitting in my car crying about somethingtat is not a big deal--what is one more day? I feel so stupid to be so upset about it.

(It doesn't help either that I just heard from my staff that I made a mistake at work. No, the person wasn't hurt but it is still a mistake that shouldn't have happened. And now,I have to call the people involved, make an incident report, and I won't be able to do this until I go in to work tomorrow. So I'm stuck worrying about that too.)

  • @ho11yday‌ will your hospital let you just have the heplock and get abx for 30-ish minutes every 4 hours? My MW offered that option at my appointment this week. It still sucks but not as bad as being tethered to medication the entire time you are in labor which is what I thought was going to happen. Sorry you are in the GBS+ club.
  • Honestly, I was a little upset too. You're not alone!

  • I'm in this club, too. Disappointed but the heplock doesn't sound too bad.

Yes, the midwife said that I'd be able to get the heplock so hopefully that means I'll be able to labor the way I want. Just need to make sure they put it in my arm and not my hand like last time. That hurt like a sonabetch.

    Thanks for the encouragement.

I just got swabbed Monday and found out today I'm GBS+.
Now I really don't want my water to break before I get to the hospital!

Anyone else have abx for this who is allergic to Penicillin?
I'm allergic to Penicillin and I don't want the stress of a possible allergic reaction to cause problems with me relaxing during labor.

I'm not allergic but get awful yeast infections from penicillin. My dr said just to tell them and I could do amoxicillin instead (not sure if that is still a type of penicillin).

  • I'm in this club:(( why does it make me feel dirty:( I'm also allergic to amoxicillin so hopefully there are other options. I didn't cry believe it or not. My dr swore its nbd and at least 30% of his patients have it so I've decided not to stress
