Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Still Bottle Feeding every 3 hours

I am STILL feeding my 4 month old every 3 hours.  We feed him 6 oz of water with 2 scoops of formula to make it 7ounces every three hours.  What's going on???

Re: Still Bottle Feeding every 3 hours

  • I'm not sure what is wrong with this? My 4.5 month old has that every 3-4 hours. How often do you expect him to be drinking?
  • I'm sorry gals...I meant to write 3 scoops for 6 oz of water!

  • Our almost 5 month old still eats every 2 1/2-3 hours. It's completely normal. And exactly what PP have said, you should be giving 3 scoops for 6 oz. I hope you haven't been doing 2 scoops to 6 oz. for 4 months.
  • Yes, my almost 6 month old often eats every 2-3 hours, usually 4-6 oz each time. He's generally STTN, occasionally waking for a bottle one a night.

  • I don't think I know what your question is. It's perfectly normal for a baby that age to eat every 3 hours.
  • I don't know all that much about FF babies, but that sounds perfectly normal to me. We EBF and DD2 still nurses every 2 hours during the day.

Even at 7 months - when we switched DD1 to formula and introduced solids- she ate every three hours during the day. She did this until she was a little over a year. Feedings could be extended to four hours at this time. There are still days she can't last more than three hours between meals and she's 2 and 1/2.

  • mine is 5moths and still eats every 4hours and doesn't STTN. So i don't see what your concern is.
  • The Bump Newsletter I received in my email said they (4 month olds) should only be having 5-6 feedings a day.  If I'm still feeding every 3 hours, that is 8 feedings a day.  Am I doing my math right? lol
  • Oh no you poor thing is Bubs not sleeping through the night yet?

I'd say if he is healthy and happy don't worry. Feed him as he wants it.

Seriously? I hope you are effing kidding. Feed your kid when he's hungry. How would you like it if you were only given breakfast, lunch, and dinner with nothing in between? If you are hungry, too effing bad, because breakfast, lunch, and dinner are the "normal" times for adults to eat. Seriously, this isn't a difficult concept.

The newsletter probably said something like your baby
may only eat 5-6 times a day. Don't take any newsletter from any site as gospel. Go by your pediatrician's recommendations and your own gut feeling.

And if you go by what I said above, you shouldn't listen to any of us internetz strangers either.

Are you for real? I think it's pretty obvious if the baby is still eating 8 times a day her LO is not STTN.
  • My LO is 3months and still has about 4-5 ounces every 3 hours unless we are out then she has longer intervals since she sleeps in the car.
  • My LO still eats every three hours but he does for the most part STTN. I'm not concerned.
  • my dd still eats every 3 hours at 5 months old. sometimes 8 oz but mostly 6oz

Same here, my son is almost 4 months old and he eats 6 oz every 3 hours, sometimes 3.5-4. At night it's usually 1-2 bottles since he's still not sleeping consistently throughout the night.
  • DS1 ate every 3 hours during the day for years and he is 5. Even with solid foods breakfast, mid morning snack, lunch, afternoon snack dinner. DS2 eats every 3 hours with his last bottle around 6/7pm but sleeps until 5:30/6am. Every once in awhile he may wake up at 2/3am or want his paci.

  • my DD has 6 oz every 3 hours during the day but she STTN.  What is yours sleeping?  I'm fine with her eating every 3. In fact i wouldnt want her to space it more as then I don't think she would be getting enough food during day.
