Parenting after a Loss

Some sad advice needed

Warning- this is a trigger subject for a lot of us

A friend (fairly casual) from high school just lost her 2 month old daughter to a rare liver issue. I've closely following her story this whole time on FB and Instagram (she's been documenting the whole experience) and it's literally all I can think about.

I happen to be back home visiting my family this week, and the funeral is on Saturday. I'd like to go to at least the visitation with the family, but not likely the whole service.

Any advice on if I should bring Alice? I don't know if that would be appropriate or if it would be too much for them to handle. I'd likely only be there for an hour or two, but she's still BFing and I don't have a pump/bottles.

Re: Some sad advice needed

  • How horrible. You have a huge heart for considering this, and my first instinct would be to keep baby at home. As you mentioned, we all have different triggers, and even if others bring their babies, you would be confident you were not the one to add to the crushing feeling in her chest right now. That is a tough one for sure.

  • My heart breaks for your friend and her family. My T&P go out to her. You are kind. I do agree though with PP, I would leave Alice. Someone mentioned BFing her right before. Is she eating solids yet? That might keep her fuller too.

  • I ended up going without Alice. Thanks for the advice.

It was a nice service, and there actually were tons of babies and kids there, but I'm happy I left her home.
