Breast pump sterilizing at work

I've gone back to work and am pumping 3 times a day but there is no sink I can use to wash my pump between usages. (The bathrooms are all motion activated and water is not hot ) I was wondering what most people do in that situation. I found a tip online that said to keep it (flanges and collection bottles) in the refrigerator between usage so that is what I've been doing for now and my son is fine. Wondering if anyone had a better idea. Thanks.

Re: Breast pump sterilizing at work

  • Best advice I had was to get extra parts and bring extra sets.  It's a huge time saver.  No need to pay top dollar for Medela extras, just get the Maymom pump parts on Amazon.

Then, when even that got too cumbersome (too much to bring, too much to clean), I started using a single set of parts and storing it in a ziplock in the refrigerator during the day.  I used it 2-3 times usually.  I always have an extra set in case I drop something or whatever.  I also have the Medela sterilizing wipes in my pump bag.

  • as PPs said, no need to wash in between if you keep the parts cool. i was too lazy to even walk my stuff down to the refrigerator at work- i kept my pumped milk and pump parts in a hard-sided cooler with an ice pack. then i threw everything in the dishwasher at the end of the day. i had a 2nd set of pump parts to use while the first set was being washed.

  • Thanks ya'll! I have to go on a team building thing in a month and I'll have to pump in my car periodically I guess. Think I'll bring a cooler and leave it in my car in a ziplock between use then too.

  • I bought a wet bag. I never have washed at work.

  • I have a wet bag that I put my parts in at work and then either throw in fridge with my pumped milk. At night I just wash the parts. I pump in the morning and before bed so I have a second set that I use and store in the fridge at home. Wash those every other day or so. Once a week I either put it all in the dishwasher or sterilize in the microwave bags after washing.
  • I got the medela wipes and wiped them down and dried with a paper towel. I also was pumping 3x a day. My room did have a sink but I didnt wash them during the day. Each night I washed everything and threw them in my bag the next morning. I never had a problem.
