clueless with curly hair

Hello!  DS is 19 months and was born with curly hair.  It is getting long but he still has not had his "first haircut" because it's so curly the length hasn't become a problem. I love his messy look, I think it's adorable, although eventually I'm going to have to start managing it.  I have straight hair and my husband's hair is really short so neither of us have experience with curls.  For those with LO's who's hair does not lie flat, what do you do with it? How do you manage it so it looks kept.  I have no knowledge in this area.  Thank you.

Re: clueless with curly hair

  • Our town has a salon that specializes in kids cuts and carries a line of baby-safe hair products called Hip Peas. They're kind of pricey, but they're supposed to be very safe. Curly hair tends to be very dry, so good products can help tame the frizzies when that happens. I have also found that keeping a spray bottle (like from the travel section at Walmart) full of water is very handy for reshaping hair-dos. DS has very straight hair but will get some wild cow licks after naps or if he goes to bed with wet hair. A spritz of water and a wide-tooth comb help a lot.

  • Don't comb it when it's dry, rarely use shampoo, use some sort if leave in conditioner. With DS I wet his hair every morning with a spray bottle, unless he chooses to look crazy, then spray leave in conditioner or put some silk in it. Make sure whoever cuts it specializes in curly hair.

  • I use a leave in conditioner and a detangler. I also will use coconut oil for the moisture. I have a daughter, but I am able to manage her hair because the detangler and conditioner helps soften it. Also, you need to brush it out so that there are no more tangles then put the detangler in it and scrunch it and it will usually stay. Here are some pics.

  • How curly is curly? I have SUPER spiral curly hair. My husband's hair is straight.  Our son hair was straight for the first 6 months then start to curl up into big bouncy curls all over his head. It was unruly by the time that he reached a year. No matter how much we styled his hair, it was a messy mop within an hour.  Now that we've been cutting his hair for a few months now, it's so neat and manageable. While I am sad that he no longer has curls, we are grateful for no more meltdowns after bath. He'd scream when we had to comb the knots out of his hair. It was past his shoulders at a year old.  A trim might works wonders for him. Good luck.

  • He has tight spiral curls at the back near his neck but the rest of his head are large messy curls that go every which way. I just started spritzing his hair with water in the am but it doesn't really look any better.  He doesn't really look like he has enough hair to even trim.

  • I agree! And also you might have to try different products depending on your baby's hair type. I tried a couple different products and finally settled on a Olive Oil moisturizer. I put that on her after using the detangler. Attached is a picture of my daughter from a few months ago.
