2nd Trimester

Coughing and Peeing… ALOT!

Have any of you had a cough for months during your pregnancy and been peeing yourself hardcore every time you cough? I am and I went to the dr and they gave me 2 inhalers and prednisone. Wasn't happy about taking anything (& worried) but apparently this was what they felt would work. (I am in my 2nd trimester now/17 weeks.) Its now day 4 and I am still coughing/peeing. Anyone else go through this? If so, what was wrong & what helped?

Re: Coughing and Peeing… ALOT!

  • You have to control the cough because the peeing can't be stopped.

I had bronchitis a week and a half ago and, yeah, lots of cough peeing. Once the cough was under control- the peeing went back to every 15min, but not in my pants. For me it took a Zpack, robitussin, and an asthma inhaler and a couple of days to get it under control.

Until then, the only advice I can give is to go to the bathroom even more frequently so you don't have anything in the bladder to escape.

  • I had the first ever pee-escape yesterday while being violently sick. I don't want it to happen when I sneeze since allergy season is just starting! I've got a pack of underwear liner pads and started going to the bathroom more often just in case.

Will kegels make a big difference? If so, I can make more effort to remember to do them too!

  • I have a hard time controlling my bladder when I'm sick. Every cough or sneeze I'm pissing myself even if I've just gone to the bathroom. I stayed home from work for 3 days back in January when I had bronchitis and the flu and I went through so many pairs of undies and  pants that I just gave up changing them constantly and sat on a towel for awhile. Very hygienic and sexy. haha

Start doing more kegels!  Might not eliminate the pee problem entirely but it can certainly help it, and I hear strong pelvic floor muscles are good for laboring too so it's win-win really.  I hope you get the sickness under control too, doesn't sound fun :-(

  • More kegels.. all the kegels.. they really do help. I got sick last month pretty bad and took to wearing and regularly changing a panty liner because I couldn't constantly run to the bathroom at work. (I also took to using some wipes to help keep the area clean.. because I'll be damned if I get a UTI right now) Occasionally with the random pout of m/s I'll still squirt when I vomit, but other than that, my troubles have subsided. I seriously make a point of doing kegels at least twice a day, and I try to do a few every time I happen to think about it.

  • I had a really, really bad virus during first tri and the cough/pee sounds very familiar. I just went to the restroom a lot to ensure my bladder was as close to empty as I could get it. I've got no pelvic floor issues but it still happened when coughing so hard. I ended up with a cracked rib or two from the coughing.

Your baby will be fine on the meds- mine is and that's exactly what I was put on. As my doctor put it, "You need to be able to breathe well so that baby can thrive."
  • OMG, me too.  If I cough or sneeze, puke, or move funny., I end up peeing.  What's helped is going to the bathroom more often.  (like every half hour if possible) that way there's less of it.

I'm finally getting to where I only go to the bathroom twice a night instead of hourly, which makes me excited.  (It's the little things)
  • i have had a cough forever as well (3 months). doc gave me advair recently but it's made very little difference and he told me i can stop taking it. i pee myself pretty frequently too :(
  • I pee when I throw up (sometimes depends on how bad Im throwing up) and when I sneeze. I haven't had issues with coughing. I differently wear underwear liners.
