28 week glucose?

Ok guys my glucose test is coming up soon on the 25th  and I wanted to know if there is anyone that did a alternative to the junk they give you? I say this because a lot of people have told me they felt sick for the rest of the day and I really don't like the fact that one of the ingredients is brominated vegetable oil.I of course will ask my doctor before the appt but just wanted to know if anyone else opted not to drink the red/orange junk they hand out?

Re: 28 week glucose?

  • I agree with the people you've spoken with the drink tastes gross and it did make me feel a little queasy, etc. afterward.  If I were to do it again I'd have a solid snack and water with me for after the test.

I think I asked the first time around (with Kaden) if I had to do it and unfortunately the answer was yes.  I hope that the doctor gives you an alternative, but if not I recommend just taking slow and steady sips.  And make sure to have eaten something with protein in the hours before hand.  (At least those were my instructions).

    Good luck!

So, I was actually instructed to fast before my glucose test (nothing to eat or drink after midnight). So I scheduled my test for 7am (earliest possible time slot). I definitely felt sick after the test and for the majority of the day afterwards. I do not eat much sugar in my normal diet, and I think the rush of sugar in the drink really hit me hard and made me feel sick to my stomach, but also gave me a killer headache and made me jittery. I tried to eat breakfast immediately following the blood draw at 8am b/c I thought that was part of it, but most of what I tried to eat just made me feel worse. I usually eat fruit and greek yogurt for breakfast, and I couldn't stomach either... I eventually got down an english muffin with some peanut butter, and that took the edge off of the nausea, but I still did not feel well for the majority of the day.

With this in mind, I would recommend planning to eat bland foods (probably basic carbs are a good idea) and nothing sugary or sweet after the test. Also, if you are able to just head home and rest after the test that would probably be best. I went to work right after, and I was mega miserable all day. Some people are not really impacted by the test, but other people really get sick from it. You might not have a bad reaction, but there is really no way to know in advance. I think some of it has to do with what your diet is typically like and how your body deals with LOTS of sugar.

The drink itself wasn't too bad. Mine wasn't orange, and it wasn't thick like I had heard and feared. It was basically a little bit thicker than soda and it was clear and tasted a bit like super sweet, flat sprite or 7Up. Getting the drink down wasn't a problem. I didn't start to feel sick until about 15 mins after I drank it.

All this being said, I don't think there is an alternative to the drink (that I know of). I wish there was, because I had a pretty yucky experience with it. I was also nervous based on my reaction to the drink that meant I would fail the test, but that wasn't at all the case for me. My doctor said that I was way, way under the cut-off, so really your reaction to it has nothing to do with whether or not you will pass.

All I can really say is good luck! :)

  • I think my first one was actually "cola" flavored.  I'm normally very able to eat sugary things with no problem and I didn't do well with the beverage at all.  I felt sick for the rest of the day and unfortunately failed the first glucose test.  For as much as I thought the first one made my stomach upset the three hour test was worse.  I actually got sick during the three hour test, so instead of retaking my doctor came up with alternatives.  She gave me two options, one being doing my own blood sugar tests and recording it for a week or something with eating a large amount of jelly beans in a very short amount of time.  Needless to say, I chose the blood sugar monitoring.  I was given a glucose meter (that a Diabetic would use) and then I just recorded my blood sugars 5 times throughout the day for a week.  Maybe that would be an option for you??

My birth center gave two small boxes of organic fruit punch for the test - just the standard whole foods 365 brand. Apparently it's the amount of glucose that's important and that's what they used. Even after that I felt queasy so I can't imagine the normal stuff.
