Fresh or frozen milk?

Hey everyone! This is my first time posting here, my LO is 5 weeks old and is EBF. We are starting to introduce bottles of BM so he will be used to it when I go back to work. I have a nice little freezer stash going and my question is, when using pumped milk do you use fresh milk that you pumped the day before or use your frozen stash? And if you use fresh milk, how do you incorporate and rotate your freezer stash so it doesn't go bad? Thanks!!

Re: Fresh or frozen milk?

  • For occasional bottles we have been using fresh milk since antibodies/immune properties are preserved in fresh milk. When LO started daycare we started doing frozen milk from the stash Mobdays and fresh the rest of the week. It doesn't rotate super quickly though so if you have a big stash you may want to use frozen more often. Good luck!!

  • I send the oldest milk to daycare, but my girls are only bottle fed 2-3 days/wk, so I'm not too concerned. If they were mostly getting bottles, I'd prob send some fresh too.

  • I am a second time mom, and I always just use the frozen stash. I feel the baby gets enough fresh milk when I nurse two or three times a day anyway. I started pumping this time at two weeks postpartum, pumping once every day, and I have a few hundred ounces already. I found it easier to freeze only. I freeze every Friday night after work. Every night I come home from work and just pour my cold milk into a jug. Then freeze into 4-6 oz bags on Friday. For my first, I just brought the frozen bags to daycare and they made the bottles there. For my second the nanny will use the frozen bags and make bottles at home

  • a lot of people send the previous day's fresh milk tuesday-friday, and then freeze friday's milk and send frozen milk on mondays. that way your LO gets fresh milk 4 days a week, but you're still rotating through what you have in the freezer. this is what i did until i stopped pumping at work at 14 months, and then i just sent frozen until i ran out.
