What does everyone think of Joan?

I'm kind of watching Elementary (it's on but I'm not paying much attention) and Lucy Liu's character is named Joan. There's also the Joan character in Mad Men who is pretty awesome. I'm just curious if people like it or if it still sounds too old?

Re: What does everyone think of Joan?

  • Too old and too bland for my taste.

I've been watching Mad Men, so I immediately think of that. I agree with PP that it is kind of bland.
  • Love it. It's my grandma's/mom's name and my daughter's middle name. I think it makes a good first name. I also think it's a good one syllable middle name to use instead of Jane/Grace/Anne/etc that are used a lot.

  • Also, it's funny how some names sound too old but others sound classic. Joan is a classic to me...but like Mildred and Esther are too old lady sounding. Not meaning you like/don't like those names...just speaks to the different tastes on the board.

  • Old and bland. Sorry. Joanna is kinda cute, if you want something similar.

  • I prefer June. I know a few Joans that are in their fifties, so to me it's not an old lady name making a comeback.

  • I like it... and it could grow on my. Names like Jane and Jill are on the rise, I don't see why Joan can't be as well. I really like the simplicity of the these shorter names.

  • I don't like it that much, but I admit Joanie is cute for a little girl. But I much prefer Jane.
  • It sounds old to me, but not old enough to be retro-chic, just frumpy middle aged.

I like Jane and June better.

  • Not a personal favorite of mine, but could be a cute middle name.
  • I don't really have a strong feeling about it one way or the other.

  • I love it and I love Joanie
  • I love it! Seems fresher than Jane to me now...
  • I adore Joan! Mad Men made me fall in love with it and the NN Joanie.

I think it is a very strong name for a woman.

I think that must be a generational thing...my grandma, mom, and most of my aunts went/go by their middle names. Granted, many of their first names are Mary or some form of Mary. Good ole Irish Catholics.

  • I love it. It's my confirmation name, and the name of a distant family member
  • I surprisingly know a 22 year old with this name and it is surprisingly refreshing to hear. I think of Joan of Arc when I hear it on her. It's nms and I would not use it, but I do find it classic. I much prefer Jane.
  • Wasn't Joanie a character on Happy Days? That's what I first thought of. I really like it. Joanie is a cute name for a baby, and Joan is a mature name for an attorney or doctor.

I agree. I love the name Joan and it is high on my list! Easy to spell, pronounce and not overdone like the current old lady names that are trendy.

    Boring.
I used to know a Joan in her 20's and it just never felt right for someone so young.

I do like June or Jodi.
