Breastfeeding

Pumping, not feeling like I am getting enough

I started with breastfeeding my son and have switched to pumping and supplementing with formula. He usually drinks 3-5 ounces at a time.  I was becoming exhausted with breastfeeding.  I have tried drinking the Mother's milk Tea, keeping hydrated and pumping every time we feed him. But I seem to only produce 6 to 8 ounces in a day.  I am going to try drinking a beer tonight, as I have heard that can help with supply.  I feel bad that I am not nursing him but it was becoming overwhelming and frustrating us both. Has anyone else done exclusive pumping and had problems with supply? I'm just hoping I'm not the only one!

Re: Pumping, not feeling like I am getting enough

  • He will be 6 weeks old tomorrow. I am trying to pump every time I feed him. I am using the Ameda Purely Yours duel electric pump.  Sometimes I get a bunch at a time, other times I don't even get 20 ml from both breasts.  I have seen a lactation consultant and my doctor and nurse practitioner.  All I am being told is the same thing I have been told before, and to just keep trying.  I'm beginning to resent it.

  • You can rent a hospital grade pump for free from WIC. You should pump for 15 minutes every two hours and massage the breast for the last 5 minutes, that helps a lot. Also, if you are getting milk towards the end of that 15 mins keep pumping. Emptying all the milk from the breast signals your body to make more.
  • when i went from EBF to EP, i had trouble with let down and got only 1.5 - 2 oz per session. i also drink the mother's tea and since i started pumping both sides at once with hands free bra instead on one side at a time i have much easier time with let down. Eventually i got better yield (3-4 oz per session). Like PP said, may be you want to try fenugreek or oatmeal? I hope it will get better soon!

I've been having problems with supply too. I pump, I don't nurse because my baby...she cries and screams when I try to nurse..plus she will not latch on anymore. Here lately, the amount I pump is slowly going down. Right now I'm pumping at least 25ml-30ml total from both breasts. I recently learned it's normal that I'm just producing that amount. I'm using the Medela electric pump where you pump both breasts at the same time to cut your time pumping in half. Works pretty good. I just got started drinking the mother's milk tea and taking fenugreek yesterday. Hopefully it'll start working, I'm trying to drink plenty of water. I will try the oatmeal, I heard that works too. So, I'm breastfeeding and supplementing with formula for my baby girl.  ;) [-O<
