LC said baby has a tongue tie

She showed me it but I still couldn't see it/understand what she was talking about. Thing is, she has a great latch, every nurse and LC has said so. She also has a strong suck and needs very little guidance (issue is my milk hasn't come in yet) so I'm reluctant to get anything fixed or clipped that might hurt her.

Is there a reason to get it fixed if latch isn't a problem?

Re: LC said baby has a tongue tie

  • A tongue tie can cause problems with speech. Ask the LC for more information on the type of tongue tie and discuss with your pediatrician. You can also ask for a referral to a specialist to help determine if it has to be corrected.

  • I would ask you pediatrician.  I know my nephew had his clipped right after he was born.  Like PP said, speech problems may develop in the future because of it.  This is just a guess though because I do not know much about it.

my DS was just a TINY bit tongue tied when he was born.  unfortunately this did affect his latch... so painful!  what we learned talking to all of the Drs and LCs was that we could 1) do nothing and DS may or may not have negative consequences to deal with as he grows up or 2) get it fixed and not have anything to worry about it.  basically, the only negative consequence from getting it done is possibly the medical bill if not covered by insurance.  they described the procedure to be less intrusive than a circumcision.  we decided to have the procedure done as the younger he is, the easier it is on him.  the ENT shaved less than 2mm off, it took about a minute and DS was able to nurse immediately afterwards.

besides talking to your pediatrician, you may want to call the local ENT for advice.  if there aren't any latching issues, it may be helpful for you to learn what effects your DD may have to deal with being tongue-tied.  GL!
  • A LC told me DS was tongue-tied as well. We went to a specialist and he wasn't. You can get it checked out. For what it's worth, my DH is tongue-tied. He has never had speech issues and didn't even realize until much later in life. See a specialist and do your own research.

  • If nursing is causing you pain, get if fixed. Find an ENT who uses a laser and it literally takes a minute and does not bleed. We had it fixed at 8 days, took about a month and a half for him to figure out the new movement and range of his tongue and it's fixed for life.

Ditto this!  We also had DS's upper lip tie lasered.  It was a very worthwhile experience.

  • @MegMo10‌ - what was the recovery like for the lip tie procedure? We were told our little guy has that and I am considering taking him to a specialist but I was curious about what it was like. Most of the info I can find on the web is about tongue tie.

    Thanks

  • Our ped did it in office with a suture kit. It was a small cut that did not even bleed and DS did not cry. It can cause speech issues, it can also cause the baby not to be able to empty the breast which can cause supply and weight gain issues.
  • If it's not causing problems leave it alone. A lot of times they resolve on their own as the child grows. Also, some lc just see ties everywhere.

knittinlins it honestly wasn't bad at all!  I think the tongue was harder than the lip.  He was a little fussy the next day, but never inconsolable.  He nursed a lot and we did skin to skin.  It has healed up so well though.  We went for a 4 week follow up appointment and the Dr. said it looked perfect.  You would never even know it was tied.
