Breastfeeding

How do I know if he wants to wean?

I have a very laid-back child. In many ways, I'm fortunate. He's almost too easygoing, though. If I offer to breastfeed him, he usually seems pretty happy to go at it. However, he never asks to nurse. (Or eat. Or nap. Or do just about anything. It's all a big guessing game to me, but since he seems pretty healthy and happy, I suppose that I'm guessing pretty well so far.)

When he wants to wean, will he just refuse to nurse when offered? Is that what people mean when they say "self-wean"?

LO is 15 months, btw. I imagine that we'll be BF for quite a while longer.

Re: How do I know if he wants to wean?

  • I've heard that if you do don't offer, don't refuse and baby doesn't ask to nurse, then baby is ready to self-wean.
DD has asked more times than I have let her nurse every day for the past 11 months. I don't see her ever self-weaning.
Thanks for the advice. I'm not sure, though. By that definition, I could have stopped anytime since he was, oh, 8 months... My LO is weird - just b/c he doesn't ask for something doesn't mean he doesn't want it. There have been a couple of times that I haven't thought to offer him water until the end of his meal, and when I offer it he eagrely guzzles it down, for example. He just doesn't often ask for anything, even if he wants it.
