What helped with morning sickness?

My friend is pregnant and having the worst morning sickness. I'd like to make her a little gift bag and was wondering what things/snacks helped with the nausea. Thanks for any suggestions!

Re: What helped with morning sickness?

  • Unless you're a physician and can prescribe her Zofran not much else helped me.

My suggestion would be to maybe do those one use toothbrushes, gum, bottled water, hand sanitizer, lip gloss and things like that.

  • Teas:
    Pure peppermint tea bags
    Pure ginger root tea bags

    Candy:
Sour candies (jolly rancher or lemon head worked for me)
    Peppermints
    Ginger candies

    Snacks:
    Pretzels
    Saltines
    PB crackers

Some little one-use toothbrushes were a life saver too! Hope she feels better!

  • Somewhere I have a list of things my doctor suggested, but I cannot remember where the heck it is, so I'll tell you what worked off that list for me. The best thing I've found is lemon heads (or any candy that contains real lemon/juice). Not a clue why they work, but they have been a life saver this past week. The other thing I use is mints, wintergreen Icebreakers really helped me during my first pregnancy. This time around, the taste makes me gag. Go figure.

Some people swear by essential oils (not to be ingested though, that's extremely important). Maybe a diffuser and some peppermint oil would be a nice addition to the basket. Another thing some people have good luck with is sea-bands. One last suggestion, but this one I would recommend researching and/or having your friend ask her OB. I worked at a health food store for a while and the most asked for thing by pregnant woman looking for a morning sickness cure was Cola Syrup. As in the flavoring form Coke, but thick, like cough syrup. But please please please research that because I don't know anything about how safe it is. Good luck!!

32 years ago this is what my mom's Dr. suggested to her as well!  (she had terrible hyperemesis, so nothing -really- helped).

    During my last pregnancy:
Drinking powerade zero through a straw helped me
grilled cheese was about the only 'food' I could choke down
sea bands/unison+B6- I took the unisom during the day as well
**Zofran!!  If she can't keep anything down she might consider asking her Dr. for this!
    Skittles
Mouthwash-putting a toothbrush in my mouth was just asking for it.

  • just 1-2 slices of dried mango every hour totally killed my all-day nausea.

  • While I have yet to be physically sick, I have had nasea constantly and can barely even tolerate the smell of food. I feel like I just got off a rollercoaster for the past 2+ weeks. Lemonade has been a life saver! Because of the sugar in pre-made I've been making a batch of homemade and sipping on it during the day. It really does settle the stomach.
  • I keep hearing that these Ginger Chews from Trader Joe's are amazing. I won't go to TJs near me because the parking is god-awful, but I would love if someone bought me some :)
  • lemon heads, sour patch kids (only some of the flavors. and that changes day to day...), frozen grapes, red gatorade with tons of crushed ice and mixed with gingerale.  Those are the only things that work for me right now. Bread and cheese WAS working but I think I OD'd on it, and now it's an aversion. Green apples help if I'm nauseous but not so bad I can't eat... it seems tart things work well

  • Our Earthfare carries preggie pops, those candies that are supposed to help. A lot of people swear by them. But not sure how effective they are since for me even Zofran didn't help so I'm not fooling myself that some candy would...
  • Definitely the Ginger Mints from Trader Joe's that PP mentioned!! They have real ginger pieces in them and are fantastic!!

What a sweet friend you are. Hopefully she will feel better soon! I'm 10 weeks and it has started to wear off. I'm almost to every other day now.

  • World Market sells ginger candies you can suck on. You can also get disposable pregnancy sickness bags (I almost always carry some type of bag with me in case I feel pukey). Yes to unisom. What about some fruity candy? I love starburst candies.

I would stay away from foods/candies, just because everyone is different, and every pregnancy is different.  I have different food aversions and different things that could help with each pregnancy.  Last time, all I could eat were goldfish.  Now I want to puke if I see a goldfish (DS loves them, and I want to gag).  Anything sugary, even if it is lemon drops or ginger candies, makes me want to gag, whereas last time, I could handle sugar.

I haven't tried one of the sea-bands, but that is a good suggestion.  Maybe a cheesy magazine or DVD to distract her.

  • Watermelon helped with both my pregnancies. I would eat it all day to help nit feel sick. Might be hard to stick in a basket though.

So, I've had terrible nausea this pregnancy and my last was bad too (I finally stopped barfing around 20 weeks, but it was bad forever). I went to cancel my chiropractor appointment (I get neck pain because I have bad posture and sit at a computer all day) because I was too nauseated to be away from my bathroom, but he told me to come in anyway and did acupuncture. I was super skeptical... but it worked.

Seriously. I still feel blah but, I have energy (some) and can talk to people without gagging and eat and keep it down. It's basically the best thing that happened to my life right now and I am kicking myself for not doing it with my first pregnancy.

If you can swing it, I recommend at least trying it.

" Only the citrus worked for me. And barely. Keeping saltines by my bed and eating one or two before getting up, worked for like 1/2 an hour. Once I got up I had to eat right away.. Usually toast and peanut butter. If I didn't eat within 1/2 an hour, I was bad sick all day. A couple if slices of lemon In My water was the only way I could drink it... She needs a lot of water. I would have loved a gift bag with a big water bottle, a few sleeves of crackers, a couple of lemons, and a gift card to Walmart or target. And maybe some bubble bath. And a heating pad lol.. Candles.. Anything soothing! Oh, and target carries ginger chews and ginger hard candies. I got these and within the week my sickness ended, so I gifted the rest of the bag to a newly pregnant friend. (Along with most of what I just listed)
