A jw just came to my door...

And I sent him away by telling him that we don't believe in god. Too honest?

I did tell him to avoid next door though, because they work nights. I figured that good deed might cancel out my heathen ways.

  • No such thing as too honest :) If you don't believe, you don't believe. No point in them trying, IMO! I would say the same ;)

  • I told the JW that came to our door that we were atheist, thinking it would send them away fast. Apparently they took "atheist" to mean "unaffiliated and open for conversion"! They will not stop visiting... I think I'm too nice about it. :/
  • Those who've visited our house were nice and didn't push it. The Comcast guy at 8pm.....not so much.
  • I answered the door in a towel when pregnant. I was't nice and said I don't come to your house and ask you to become an atheist please don't come here again. It worked.

I don't think it's too honest at all! They are knocking on your door and should be understanding of your religious or non religious beliefs no matter what they may be.

We had so many visits (from the same people over and over) that I finally got a cute sign from Etsy that says "no soliciting or religious queries." It's helped tremendously.

  • My SIL once invited a knocking JW to her church to see what hers was like. She said that got them real quiet, real quick and they left. If I ever have one visit I plan to try that!

  • Wow it seems like everyone has a story! I have somehow managed to get through life with no interactions with jw, until yesterday anyway. DH, on the other hand, has been approached (like, walking around our town) multiple times. Funny that he gives off that vibe, he's more hard core atheist than me!

  • I have never met a JW. I'd respond the same way.

JW don't come to our house anymore. Saying "we're atheist" quiets the older parishioners. The Baptist church, however, loves to send 7-14 year old kids to our door during the summer and upcoming holidays. I was very disturbed that a little girl had no problem approaching dh while he was working in the yard last summer. She was alone and didn't seem to be bothered by "stranger danger". The churches in our town really pressure the kids to get others to attend without thinking of the kids' safety.
I do think it's weird that she was alone (assuming she was like 7), but I don't really subscribe to stranger danger. UO? I mean, I'm teaching DS to be cautious, but I think there are far more good people than bad in the world. I don't want DS to grow up being fearful of everyone he doesn't know.

I have a friend who refuses to let her daughter even say hi to strangers when they are out -- she tells her DD they are bad people who might take her away. Meanwhile, I've been impressed lately that DS seems to be coming out of his shell and will have short conversations with people at the park or on our walks.
