Going to a boutique for anatomy u/s

My husband is in the military and missed our NT scan, which I am sad about bc the baby was showing off and striking all kinds of poses! The tech was laughing like crazy. Anyway they have me scheduled for an the anatomy scan during a time when DH is deployed :( I know military wives go through this all the time, but this our first and I want him to see our baby moving like crazy in there! I tried to get them to change the date a little, but they won't see me before 19 weeks, and the doctor is gone for 5 days before DH leaves. Anyway, SIL said there is boutique by our house that does anatomy scans as early as 17 weeks, and it is a little less than $100, I was just wondering since the doctor won't do it that early, if y'all think I should go or just wait it out and try to video.

  • If you mean an u/s so DH can see baby? Yes I would do it. $100 and he won't see an u/s otherwise? I would go ahead and do it.

  • Some boutiques do anatomy scans but you usually have to have a doctors note for it. I would definitely go to your doctor for the anatomy scan but you can go to the boutique for a regular ultrasound so your DH can see the LO.

    I say go for it!!
My husband and received a dating u/s back in week 7 and I don't get another one until week 20! Due to a past loss, we are impatient and can't wait that long. So, my husband and I are going to a boutique to get an u/s with pictures for only $60 when I'm 15w3d!
  • I agree that I would only allow a medically-trained tech to perform the anatomy scan. They're assessing heart chambers and internal organs of your baby, and there are obviously big health implications if it's done wrong.

Personally, I would also not go to a boutique to have an unregulated machine used on my baby by someone with no medical training. I know many people have a different view.

Your husband will have tons of ways to bond with your baby: feeling kicks, watching your belly grow, being there (hopefully! <3) for baby's birth and all the joy and madness of parenting for the rest of your lives. If showing him the baby moving in utero is really important to you, try bringing a little video recorder to your anatomy scan? We did this with my first and it was really cool.

    Good luck deciding!

  • I think just going there for the ultrasound would be fine. I wouldn't trust them to do the actual anatomy scan, though. I'm going to a place like this in about 4 more weeks so DH can go with me. He'll be working a different shift when I have the anatomy scan and won't be able to go. He also can't go to the NT scan tomorrow.

  • I decided not to have any elective ultrasounds last time and will this time too. But, in your situation I would absolutely get an ultrasound done so your husband can see the baby. Leave the anatomy scan for your doctors office though.

Boutiques don't do actual anatomy medical scans but they are trained medically to do them. They for sure so gender determination and looksie ones. You can't operate a sonography machine without school. Most places you have to get a medical signature from your doctor and they are required to notify them of anything suspicious they see at least all the facilities I know of here even for a sex scan.

I had a sex determination done with my last and it was nice. I'd do it.
  • We're also military and DH won't be there for the anatomy scan. We're going to a boutique in town just to find out the sex. They don't discuss anything else with us. I'm going to keep my anatomy scan and just go by myself but at least he'll be there with me when we find out the sex!
  • In your case, I totally would.   Otherwise I think waiting another couple weeks is no big deal.

  • I was in that situation with DS. My husband was deploying when I was 17 weeks, so he would miss everything from there on out. We went to a sonogram school at 16 weeks to find out the sex, and I went to boutiques twice throughout the pregnancy so I could send him videos and pictures. I would absolutely recommend doing that so he didn't feel like he was completely missing out on everything. As pp said, I'm pretty sure only the doctors offices will do a/s.

  • Could he Skype into the u/s? A friend of mine was away from home when his wife had hers and she just skyped him in. To as good as being there, but better than missing out entirely
