Breastfeeding

EP to EBF - long

Hello, my twin girls are 10 days old. They were born at 36.3 weeks and are still in NICU. They were also IUGR.

They are taking their time in learning how to suck and swallow. I do offer the breast to them 2-4 times a day, and they take anywhere from none-30 cc from breast feeding with an average usually around 10cc. However breast feeding can really tire them out. Especially my smaller twin. She is 4 lbs 1 oz.

I pump 8 times a day and they are now just getting breast milk. They are now doing great with the bottle. They hardly get any feeds down their tube. If I keep up with pumping and bottle feeding they should be home soon.

However I don't want to exclusively pump for twins and bottle feed them. I would love to get them to breast feed more. Any tips or recommendations or success stories? I currently use a nipple shield. Thanks!

Re: EP to EBF - long

  • Thanks for your reply. I will start trying without the shield on my right side. My left side is much harder for them to latch since I have a flat nipple.

I just get so frustrated because the nicu nurses comment how they are bottle spoiled, and how the bottle is so much easier. I want my girls home and feeding is our last issue so the nurses push the bottle to get them home.

  • Thanks theresat858. At the nicu they are taking their bottles in 10 minutes. They are not working for the milk at all.

I used tommee tippee bottles with my daughter so I will bring some to the nicu tomorrow to see how they do with them.
