Tubes?

Ds has his ears checked about 2 months ago and passed 3 hearing tests. He has never had an ear infection, but I seriously think he would benefit from tubes. It seems like they would help him hear better. If he says "Thank you" or "What is that?" it sounds like he's trying to say it, but it comes out muffled or mumbled.

Does anyone have tubes? What was the reasoning for it? Has it helped with speech?

I'm no expert but it doesn't really sound like he needs them. Has a Dr. Suggested them or expressed concern about his speech? Speech comes with time and at this age the difference between children can be great.

No, no one has suggested them. I was just worried that he might not being hearing right, in order to speak. I am going to get a 2nd opinion, just to be safe.

I had tubes because I had recurring ear infections. I would talk to an ENT if you're really concerned.

Putting tubes in is a surgical procedure. The point is to relieve the pressure of fluid that builds up from ear infections. There is no way a doctor is going to consider doing that if he has good hearing, and has never had an ear infection. If you're concerned about his speech, definitely bring it up with his pedi. Toddlers aren't always very articulate, so I would say try not to worry.

Tubes only helped DS speak better is because he can now hear better. Before he would only say 'dada' which he learned early. Before the constant ear infections and fluid in his ears. Once that was drained and he could actually hear us, he learned to speak better because he could hear what we were saying. Imagine listening to people talking while your head is under water. THATS What DS would hear.
