Newborn help!

Mamas! I nursed my son for 19 months so I thought nursing LO2 would be a breeze! Boy was I in for a surprise! Little Leo is 8 days old....I am having a hard time! He will barely latch on my right side at all! The breast has milk, is not engorged, but he still seems to have forgotten the perfect latch he had at the hospital! The left side is a bit better but still takes a lot of manipulation, nipple sandwiching and relatching to get on there. Feeds are short.

I'm going to see a LC and his pedi to check weight gain on Monday. He's having decent output so he's getting enough but it is not easy! And I could not go out in public yet because getting him latched on takes so much doing (I usually end up sitting on the floor to get him on).

Sorry, I know it's hard to give any advice when I'm unclear what is going on in the first place! But any words of wisdom??

    I have heard this tip. Start him nursing on the good side, then delatch and slide him to the other side without turning him. So you'd start with cradle hold on the left then slide to football hold on the right.

    No tips really, but my DD did this too. She latched fine at the hospital, but once we got home it was a different story. We saw a LC who helped with positions and it didn't really work. I kept trying and one day latched on a couple times, then the next day she latched on! Though her latch wasn't perfect, it still was a latch and now 11 weeks later she's nursing great! Good luck!

    I'm in a similar situation here.  DD1 nursed great and DD2 (also 8 days old) is a different story.  Just keep trying.  It'll click eventually.

    Yeah, I'd just say keep playing with positioning (both yours and your LO's).  Try different holds, different pillow configurations, try nursing in different chairs or in bed, etc.  The chair in the hospital was great for us, but when I got home I eventually realized the couch didn't have enough back support so I was sitting a bit farther back and had to slouch more.  Once I propped more pillows it helped so much.  It sounds dumb, but it took me a while to get it right.    :) Good luck!

    Just to follow up, I saw a lactation consultant today. She set me up with a nipple shield and he latched on immediately and perfectly! Apparently my right nipple doesn't protrude enough. My first baby was able to get it but this little guy wasn't!, so looks like I'll try with the shield for a while!
