maternity leave

Right ladies from the UK im looking for help.

I have been souring the internet, when i was last off with my Daughter on maternity leave i read something that said that if the mother returned to work the father of the baby could take over the rest of the paid maternity leave period, do anyone know if this is true and where is find the answers and if it is true how we go about setting it up.

i am only going to be taking a short maternity leave of about 4 or 5 months as that is about all we can afford as i an the main bread winner in our house hold and my husband will be stopping working to look after the children so him getting my SMP will help alot.

any help or advise is welcome.

Re: maternity leave

  • yea come over to the int'l board - there are lots of UK ladies

that's how it works in OZ though, the woman can take part of the time off and the man can take the rest if they want to

4 or 5 months would be like a dream for me!  Im with you on the 6weeks.  I found out I can take 8 weeks but the first 2 have to be my 2 weeks of paid vacation.  SIGH.  Come on US get with it!

To my knowledge no it is not true father just get 2 weeks.
There is serious talks of that being debated in parliament to do that so a couple would get the 52 weeks between them and it would be up to them to split it as they will (which is the scandinavian model)

I'm just so jealous.... In America 4-5 months is extremely long. I get one week of paid time off that I've been saving up (only 2 weeks of PTO/sick time a year and can only carry over 1 week from year to year so I might have 6-7 days by my due date), 4 weeks of short-term disability that caps at 47% of my salary, and... that's it.

This is how it works in Quebec (parents can split it however they choose).  I don't think it's the case for the rest of Canada though.

No, that is not true. In the rest of Canada, the mother gets 17 weeks of pregnancy leave, then the remaining 35 weeks can be split up in any way between the two partners (or used concurrently, but then you are using up the time at twice the rate). Me and my DH are using 42 weeks for me and 10 weeks for him.
  • I give you ladies credit, 6 weeks is definitely does not seem like enough time. I can take the full year here in Ontario and am so grateful that is an option

Hi, long time lurker here... I am from Ontario, Canada. We also have the same thing... we can split between both mother and father. Hope you are able to find the answer you need!
