Need Toy Ideas

I realized the other day as I tried to get my two year old interested in coloring with me...again...that he is totally different than me. I always loved to color and paint...why doesn't he? It occurred to me this child doesn't have that same creativity plug that I do. He likes to take batteries out of things, to locate where the batteries go, how does a key fit into a lock, find out how to put his toys under the doors, under the refrigerator and sometimes he seems to conduct his own mini experiments. Any suggestions for toys that would encourage him and be of interest to him?

Re: Need Toy Ideas

  • Stuff around the house.  A kid like that is probably less likely to play with it if it looks like a toy!
But more seriously, we have done little experiments with bowls of water and rocks and things to make the rocks float, and DD just gets stuff from around the house - tape, aluminum foil, pencils, paper, sticks, etc.

I'm sure other people will have good ideas too, but I'm going to vote for as much household stuff as you can manage. :)

take a parmasean cheese bottle (empty and cleaned) and fill a bowl with, straws etc and see what will fit inside! Or you can maybe use an empty kleenex box, or milk jug with different size holes cut out on the top. good luck! my little one LOVES to just transfer items from one bowl to another, to another, to another.

My oldest is really into blocks and other manipulatives. If he can put it together and take it apart he loves it.

I do crafty things with him too but I usually leave it open ended. I'll just leave some paper and crayons/chalk out on the table or tape contact paper to a surface and set out a basket with paper scraps, cotton balls, flowers, tissue paper, ect.

  • At that age, my DS was into wooden or chunky puzzles, megablocks and anything he could stack.  Sometimes, just banging around pots, pans and bowls was fun...I'd dump out my big bin of plastic containers and he would have a field day.

BTW, my DS did not become really interested in coloring and painting until he was closer to 5 years old where my DD is 2 is she loves to scribble with crayons.

I was going to post this. My DD's favorite thing is to 'fix' things. She LOVES this and can do it with just a little bit of daddy's help.
