What does this sound like? (Sleep question-sorry)

Well my time has come- which I knew it would. I never chime in on the sleep posts (other than the swaddling ones) because I have had an amazing 10-12 hr straight crib sleeper from 11.5 weeks until this week (DS is almost 5.5 months). But with that being said, any time anyone asks if he sleeps through the night I have always said "for now" because I knew my time would come.

He used to go down easily at 7-- drowsy and swaddled in his crib. Last week we worked on transitioning naps to the crib and breaking him of the swaddle. It went really well! Went from STTN with one arm swaddled to both arms out. Well the last 4 nights or so it has been like a completely different baby. Screams when we lay him down at 7. Wakes up 3-10 times at night. His naps are off. I tried swaddling again out of desperation but that didnt help. He seems to prefer the arms out now.

Does this sound like the 4MW a month late? Teething? Sleep regression? He is gnawing ferociously on anything he can get his mouth on and drooling. He's not irritable during the day - even though his naps are off. He's not eating more or less- the same. He's been having solids once a day since he was just over four months and that didnt affect his sleep at all. I haven't given him any new foods this week.

I just want to help him. If it is teething maybe he needs some baby orajel at night?

  • Thanks Sing! It's been a rough few nights but I'm trying to stay positive. I'm grateful to have had as long of a great run of sleep as we had all these months. I know he will get back on track at some point because he's just such a happy, laid back baby. I just wish I knew what it was so I could try to help him.

Pretty sure if I nursed him or put him in bed with me it might help sooth him faster and maybe omit some of the wake ups. But I hate to get in habit of that if he's not really hungry. Doesn't seem like a growth spurt.

  • Sleep regression. It sounds pretty late for the 4 MW. A is about the same age as your DS. We're past the most recent bout of horrible sleep but it lasted about two months for us. Like @wedding06, we were dealing with the swaddle transition, the 4 MW, and an eternal cold (or more likely according to the pedi, 5 separate colds with only a few days break between each).

I doubt it's teething; when A's teeth are bothering him he has really rough days, they don't just affect him at night. He also eats a little less because sucking on the bottle hurts his gums.
  • With my daughter, teething was 24 hours of pain. She was inconsolable even when held.

If he's fine during the day, I'd say it's not teething.

  • Thanks for the feedback ladies. I guess I've created a sleep regression with the nap adjustment and unswaddling. I just didnt realize it because it went so well for about a week.

Last night was a little better night. Went down at 7 and he woke 4 times between 7 and about 10. He woke at 3:30 but comforted himself pretty quick with his lovie and went back to sleep. Then I fed at 5 and he slept in my arm until 6:15. At least I got a long stretch last night-- unlike previous nights.=)
