My baby stands on her ankles

I noticed awhile back when my baby was in her jumper that she would turn on her ankles a lot. She also would even stand with her toes curled all the way under. This didn't concern me at the time because I figured that it was just because she wasn't bearing all of her weight. Now that she is starting to pull her self up on things and stand, she is doing the same thing and I am a bit concerned. She CAN stand flat footed but the majority of the time she is either up on her tip toes or she turns her ankles and stands on the sides of her feet...This is my first baby so I don't have anything to compare to. Do you think this is the first signs of an issue or is this something babies do and eventually learn to stand correctly?

Thanks in advance!

  • She might need a brace. My brother needed on when he was younger because both of his feet turned outward the same direction (wind swept feet). The brace attached to the crib and my mom would buckle his feet in every night. He's fine now though.

Does she have a well child visit soon? I think the sooner you talk to a doctor the better. Personally I have never seen that but they can tell you if it's nothing to worry about.

  • She is always barefoot in the house which is really where she does most of her standing. I was actually thinking of putting shoes on her in hopes it might force her to stand flat. She has a doctor appointment in 2 or 3 weeks and I will definitely bring it up.

It's almost like she is just wobbly still so her feet and ankles just do what they want and she lets it happen lol...At the very least, assuming everything is fine, I don't want her to make standing on the sides of her feet or on her tip toes a habit.

  • If it worries you ask. While a lot of babies do it my niece ended up getting surgery to lengthen her muscles. Most just get braces or grow out of it

My DD stood on her toes up until she actually started free-standing and walking at which point she corrected herself. Her pedi noticed it when she first started pulling up, but said it wasn't much of a concern unless she continued to do it beyond age 2.

  • DS did this at first, but self-corrected. He's still not walking at 13 months, but he's cruising along furniture, FWIW.

  • Yep, my DS does the toe walking intermittently (sometimes he does at first and then he'll put his foot down all the way).

At 15mo he's almost walking by himself, but not quite independently yet. Sounds like this is something that lots of kids do when first learning and it self corrects in time once they learn how to use those muscles.
