Outdoor/Indoor toy question

I'm just wondering if I'm being overly anal about this....

Do you have certain toys that stay outdoors and ones that stay indoors? What I mean is I don't like Ava taking any of her "indoor" toys outside to play with. Indoor toys stay indoors and outdoor toys stay outdoors. Make sense? I may be overly paranoid about bringing extra germs into the house since we have so many animals (ours) that cruise our backyard on nice days. And then random wild animals that visit our front yard whenever.

I am also one of those who insists that all shoes come off as soon as you come in the house. I am already vacuuming our house twice a day, sometimes more, and I steam clean our carpets about once a week.

When we got home from work yesterday 2 of Ava's indoor things (one of her ride on toys and her leap frog grocery cart) were out on our driveway and I had a mini freak out. Our babysitter said they played out in the front yard for almost 2 hours which also freaked me out. I am not comfortable with her playing in the front yard. We live on a busy road and even though we have a long driveway, it still makes me uneasy. My H said he is fine with it as long as she is playing close to the house.

So please tell me, am I over reacting to all this? I plan to talk to our sitter when she gets here in a bit to tell her not to take the toys outside.

Re: Outdoor/Indoor toy question

  • I agree with you on both things. We have separate toys for her to play with outside and inside. Mostly because I want her to be able to get toys dirty and I'm too lazy to spend time cleaning toys that come in from outside. We have a rubbermaid tote in the garage that we just throw all of the outside toys into and it's all stuff that can be hosed off once in a while. If you have plenty of stuff to keep her busy outside, I don't see the need to be taking indoor stuff out there as well.

And we definitely don't play in the front yard, we are working on teaching her to stay on the grass in the backyard and not to go past the side door when we're outside. I don't think you're out of line to ask the sitter to not play in the front with her anymore.

  • I have no problem with Dagny taking indoor toys outside but we also haven't really accumulated many outdoor toys. If you have a good selection of outdoor toys I would just let the sitter know that you prefer keeping the toys separate.

We only play in our front yard because our backyard is too steep. We are on a cul-de-sac though. But even if it was a busier road I'm sure your sitter is keeping a close eye on your LO. Is your backyard fenced so that the animals roam? Maybe she's uncomfortable with being back there with all the animals and poop?

  • Oh also - does your sitter have a car seat for your LO? With the weather being so nice now Dagny and I spend hours at the park. It would probably be nice for your sitter to have the option to take your LO to the park to play if you are uncomfortable with her playing out front.

Thanks everyone! I guess I was over reacting a bit :) one of Ava's ride on toys got left outside yesterday and then we had a huge thunderstorm. It was brand new and now it's all dirty. This was exactly what I wanted to avoid. Now it is only an outdoor toy!

As far as the backyard goes, it's completely fenced and huge. I'd rather Ava just stays back there. We pick up the poop a few times a day so it's usually very clean. The only animals that roam back there when we aren't home are a few chickens and a couple ducks. Sometimes the dogs and pig but our sitter lets them all in and out of the house so she's comfortable with them. I know she and Ava play out there a lot too.

I'm by no means a germaphobe, but I do try to keep our house as clean as possible :)
