PP vaginal discharge?

I'm 3 weeks PP and after a relatively low key day I felt a gush and checked down below and saw a brown mucus discharge. It wasn't blood. Called the after hours care and they said just to watch it and make sure it doesn't get worse.
Anyone else experience this? I wish the nurse gave me an explanation as to what it was other than it could have been caused by over exertion.

  • Yeah, sounds within the range of normal.

I would think that brown discharge would just be old blood and tissue being expelled, kind of like that last few days of your period. What makes you think that it wasn't blood?

It was more mucus like, opaque and just didn't have the same sheen to it. It wasn't like the blood at the end of a period.

  • Alllllllll kinds of crazy stuff came out of my vagina last time. As long as there are no huge clots (think golf ball sized) and no foul smell you should be ok. I remember having lots of brown weirdness (mine was really watery kind of) towards the end.

  • Brown blood wouldn't worry me much. I have been having delayed postpartum hemorrhaging the past three days and the blood is bright red. It sucks. Big time. :(
  • I had something similar after my D&C.

  • Thanks for all the replies! Wish this was something they mentioned in birthing classes or hospital discharge. Oh well, I'll just keep monitoring and taking it easy, although the burst of nice weather has me itching to take LO for a walk!
