2nd Trimester

4 months and only gained 1 pound

Hi everyone!  I'm a first time mom and when I went to my monthly appt in March, I had gained 4 pounds.  When I went back last week for my April appt, I had lost 3.  I've always been a little overweight, so I'm wondering if this is normal.  The doctor didn't seem too concerned, but mentioned that if I lost more, then they would run some more tests.  My eating habits have remained the same for the most part, so I can't imagine why I would be losing weight.  My only idea would be all of the bloat that was hanging around during the 1 trimester, has gone away.  Has anyone else had this happen?

  • It's pretty normal for weight to fluctuate between the 1st and 2nd tri. If your dr didn't seem concerned, I wouldn't worry about it. I lost 10 lbs during my 1st tri, then again it was due to morning sickness, but nonetheless, as long as my dr wasn't concerned, neither was I.

  • It's pretty normal.  I too lost weight, about 10 pounds, in my first trimester.  I am 24 weeks and have only gained about 4 pounds of that back so far, but all of that has come in the last 2 weeks.  My doctor was concerned in the beginning and put me on anti-nausea meds, however once I stopped loosing he was ok and is happy now that i am gaining healthy amounts.
  • I think its ok as long as your dr isnt concerned.  Ive actually lost about 12 lbs.  My dr was ok with that, as long as Im eating enough and are not hungry through out the day.

  • I lost 5 pounds because I was so sick, from morning sickness and flu and sinus infection, for several weeks. My doctor didn't seem concerned at my last appointment because I started to gain it back. Some women lose weight in pregnancy before they start to gain it. I wouldn't worry if your doctor isn't worried.

  • I have only gained 2 lbs. Your doctor would say something if he was concerned.

  • I've gained 3 pounds at 17 weeks. Dr says there's no concern and would actually prefer if no weight was gained in first tri and a slow gain in second. I gained 16 with DD and there was no concern.
  • A lot of women lose weight before they gain weight, or gain weight slowly to start off with. If your doctor isn't worried, you shouldn't be either!

  • I started off with a little extra belly than I would have liked to(I was in the process of trying to lose weight when I found out I was pregnant). However I have not gained a single pound to this day and I weigh myself each morning. However my bra size has gone up and my belly has re-shaped into more round and less pudgy than it was. I think I might have actually lost some and then gained boobs and baby. Fruits and veggies do wonders. Eating healthy for the win!
  • At my 18 week appointment I was only up 1 pound. The OB said if I didn't gain 5-6 pounds by my 22 week appointment they would have me keep a food journal just to make sure that I am taking in enough, but she wasn't overtly concerned. I had a few extra pounds on after my fertility treatments and that combined with that some women just don't gain a lot...she said I just might be built that way.

  • I'm in the same boat. I'm normally 125 lbs and the first tri was brutal and I lost 6-7 pounds. I'm now at 127ish and my doctor is happy. His only concern was that I wasn't losing anymore now that I'm in second tri. I'm 18 weeks and able to eat, so I should be gaining soon enough. As long as you eat when you're hungry and aren't throwing up, I'm sure you'll gain soon!

  • I've had the opposite problem. Eating healthy, basically the same as before, but gained fast in the beginning and leveled out around week 16. Everyone gains differently. If your doc isn't worried, don't worry about it.

  • normal. I never gained a pound in my 1st tri even though i was eating wildly lol. However, once i hit about 20wks thats when i started to put weight on even though i was eating the same. odd i know. Just make sure your eating great food throughout the day including all food groups and other then that i wouldnt be to worried.

  • Lucky losing weight ladies.  I was hoping I would be one to lose weight during the first trimester.  No luck for me!  I was 44#s over my "normal" weight (according to the CDC) when I found out I was pregnant, so losing a few #s would have been awesome:)  Thankfully I can report I only gained 1# during my 1st.  Hopefully the 2nd or 3rd doesn't bring a whole lot more.  Happy gaining:)

  • I have gained 1lb so far and my doctor is not concerned. Baby looks great. I had no morning sickness, I started out 135lbs at 5'7" so I wasnt big to start. I never "lost" weight, I just have not gained.

Weight gain is different for all of us I think I had gained 12lbs at this time with my son. I would ask your doctor, nobody on here is able to tell if your weight gain is affecting your baby.
