Baby mapping (aka Is that a butt or a head?)

Anyone familiar with "baby mapping" where they basically draw on your belly (or just tell you) what position LO is in? I've been feeling what must be either a butt or a head in the upper left quadrant that keeps trying to burrow its way out and it's driving me nuts not knowing which one it is.  It's huge, so you can definiltey feel it with your hands, so I don't think LO being too small would be a problem.  Anyone had this done? Anyone given any info from your provider about this stuff?  Here's a pic of what I'm talking about: <img src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-EcKS4FnejXU/T22p486VQNI/AAAAAAAAAMw/50j1WXKARzw/s1600/Baby+Elizabeth+266+-+Copy.JPG">

Re: Baby mapping (aka Is that a butt or a head?)

  • I have seen this. I have not done it but LO loves to burrow its ass in the same area you described.

  • My midwife has been telling me how she thinks baby is positioned at each appointment lately but she does it just by feeling and said it's just her best guess.

As for me, in both this pregnancy and my first I never could tell what part of baby was poking/kicking me.  I'd always just put my hand over whatever was pressing out and think "Awwww, what a cute butt/head/elbow/knee/foot/whatever."

I get little fast punches in the crotch and drags by the ribs.. So I'm pretty sure it's a lil rump I've been feeling :) I asked my doc and she said lo is flipping so much right now that there is no point in trying to find out! It's true! She flips like crazy lately
  • @hampire I totally do that too. The other day he kicked back really hard. He didn't like me pushing on him... but he's hurting me!

I also think the baby's butt is up at the top of my right side and head down and left. I get kicks/punches in both locations, but the kicks up high are much stronger, so I assume it must be feet. Also I shined a flashlight on him last night and he moved away when I put it down and left, so I am assuming that's where his face is.

Also... I am already mean to this child and it's not even out of me yet. I am going to be a horrible mother.
  • I know she is breech because they told me, but I can never figure out what is what! Occasionally she presses one part of her body really hard against my stomach and I can tell it's a body part but I can never tell which one. I want to know!

I'm not new. I just hate The Bump.

  • I wish I could tell what is what. When I feel something hard I wish I knew if it was a butt or a head.
  • My OBs tend to push on my stomach to judge how the baby is positioned. Last appointment they said he is head down.

I've tried mapping a few times.  I busted out my Maternal-Child nursing book and spent a good fortyt minutes prodding around.  I wasn't too successful.  I can tell the difference between a "big part" and a "little part" when I get kicked but that is about the extent of it.  It does not help that this baby hates being poked and squirms everytime you try to palpate him or get his HR.
  • Isaiah is head down, usually with his back to the right side of my body, and his butt and feet curled under my ribs.

  • My MW said it will be easier to tell later on. Once they fatten up, the butt becomes squishy and the head remains hard. Until then, they feel similar.

  • I had never heard of this, but the same thing was driving me crazy because I felt this big lump on my upper right side and lots of movement there. I finally had another ultrasound two days ago, and saw that it's her butt. So happy to know that she's head down now! DH said the movement must be her farting on me... but he also claims she can't be his because supposedly she has an ugly nose. Go figure.

  • I never thought to ask my OB about this... definitely going to ask at my appt next week! Sometimes I feel a big, round...something right under my ribcage on the right side but have no idea whether it's a butt or a head.

as of Wed my babys head was on the left side and her bum and feet were on the right, but my Ultra Sound tech said she will move positions and roll around to whatever is most comfortable for her depending on what my body is doing (laying left side, right side, sitting up all day, walking) up until right before I deliver her. So that even multiple times a day she can change positions on me.

My baby keeps sticking his butt out where I feel it upper right side. So my OB said his butt is there, his back on side of my belly and his head is down.

That makes a lot of sense. I guess I'll have to wait for his little butt to plump up to be sure. Now I'm thinking about his cute little plump rump. Sqeeeeee! :)

  • @joules235 That is a super cool link! My LO hasn't flipped yet and I can tell bc his strongest kicks are on the lower left side.  His head is where you are describing the burrowing and I can tell bc its hard and kindof round like you mentioned.  I don't think his squishy butt would be that hard yet :) My doc said the babies usually flip upside down in the 32-36 week phase.
