Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Losing That Late Afternoon Nap

LO is 4 months old. Her bedtime is usually around 7pm. Three days a week at the daycare center she's usually up from her last nap around 2:45 or 3pm. I've tried to put her down for a naplet when we get home around 5pm, but she either doesn't want it or gets really crabby when we wake her up around 5:45pm to start the last feed of the night and get her ready for bed. So I feel like we just need to push her bedtime up on those days. It's confusing though because on the weekends we very easily put her down for a nap from 4-5pm and at my parent's house 2 days during the work week she gets that nap in. So I think it's just that her routine gets modified a bit at daycare for various reasons. Anyone else run into this problem? Does this start to work itself out? How long does your LO last between her last nap of the day and bedtime before getting crabby?

Re: Losing That Late Afternoon Nap

  • My second LO will be three months old later this week. Her DC and home routines vary some. She usually takes a late afternoon nap (about 45 minutes between 6 and 7) when she's home/on weekends, but is more alert and not wanting to nap as much on daycare days. She also goes to sleep for the night earlier on DC days. I think her evening sleep varies because of the change in activity level and nature; DC vs. being home and/or out w the family. I just roll with it. As I recall, DD#1 very gradually dropped her short evening nap. She would still doze at 7/8 months occasionally. Babies vary. I wouldn't stress about it too much. If she's tired when you get home from work, offer her a nap. If not, your idea of moving up her bed time seems logical as long as it works for you. DD usually lasts between 1 and 1 1/2 hours between her last nap and night time feeding and sleep.
