Question about Potty Training

I used to lurk on this board and participate a little but have mostly been on BNB the past few months.  I asked this question over on the 24 Month+ board last night, but I was hoping that maybe y'all would have some ideas for me as well.

My son is almost three, and I would consider him potty trained if it only came to pee.  He refuses to poo in the potty.  I know that he's capable of it, and that he's purposefully holding it.  He will wait until I put a diaper on him at naptime and bedtime.  He will usually poo within a minute or two of me putting the diaper on him.  Is there anything that I can do to encourage him to use the toilet or is this the sort of thing that will just happen when he's ready?  (Also, he can be very stubborn when it comes to doing something new.)

Re: Question about Potty Training

  • This was DS to a T! He would wait until he got a diaper on at bedtime and go then. Honestly, we just waited it out until he was ready. We had some real issues with DD trying to make her go and we didn't want to go down that road again. I think it was shortly after he was 3 1/2 when he figured it out. We've had one accident since.

  • My kid does the exact same thing! I started putting him in pull ups at nap time and put the little potty in his room. I told him that if he needs to go, he can go in the potty and tell me, and I'll bring him his potty treat (mini Rolos). So far this week, he has started going in his pull up and then finished on the potty, so it's kind of working. I'm hoping that eventually he'll be able to recognize the sensation and get to the potty before he starts. Other than that, I've got nothing. My kid is pee trained but still pooping in his diapers at 3 years 2 months, so clearly I'm not an expert.

  • Thanks for all of the responses!  I guess we'll just wait it out and see how it goes.  I may try some of the above suggestions too.  I think that he may have a fear of it for some reason.  He'll get excited and tell me that he's not scared, and when it comes time to go, he won't.

Also, sorry that it took me a day to respond; we've been sick and doing lots of sleeping ;)

  • (Also, there is a PT board, though it is about as dead as can be.  But it might be worth a look through for you.)

@CurlingRocks , I had no idea that there was a PT board!  Cool, thanks!  I'll go take a look to see if I can't find something.
