Pregnant after a Loss

DHA & Fish Oil

Can we discuss this for a second? I just bought a new brand of Fish Oil pills on Amazon called Now Foods or something like that, because it had a higher concentration of DHA per serving than my previous brand (Nature Made) of fish oil pills. The Nature Made brand had me taking two pills daily to get the full serving of 240 mg of DHA. My new bottle requires only one pill a day and gives me 500 mg of DHA. In my research I had read that pregnant women want a fish oil pill that gives them a higher ratio of DHA vs the other Omega 3, EPA. So this brand seemed to be a good value to me and had received positive reviews.

I called my OB office and asked the nurse if that amount of DHA was okay to be taking. She wasn't sure so said she would call back after speaking with the physician assistant about it. Well, I just got the call back and apparently the PA says pregnant women should be taking in no more than 300 mg of DHA daily. So, great! Now I might have to return the supplements. Or maybe I should call again and see if I can take the pills every other day? Wahhh.

Thoughts on this? How much DHA do you ladies take, if any? What fish oil brand(s) do you use?

Re: DHA & Fish Oil

  • I take Nature Made. I was told to be sure my vitamin had DHA, but I wasn't given a minimum or maximum. Sorry I'm not more help.

  • That is totally news to me and not what the American Pregnancy Association says. I take Nordic Naturals Prenatal DHA which has 450 mg of DHA per serving and it's the "official omega 3 of the APA."

  • Thank you ladies! I had considered getting the same Nordic Naturals that most of you are taking but it was a little out of my price range. I don't want to go against doctor's orders or anything (technically not my doctor...), but I scoured the internet looking for information on this and most of what I read said a minimum of 300 mg of DHA a day was recommended, not maximum.  :-??
  • I take Nortic Naturals. I don't take the one that says pregnancy on it. I take the strawberry flavored ones. Love them!!! No fishy after taste. I forget how many milligrams it is. A friend who had twins last year told me about them.

  • I take the Prenatal DHA Nordic Naturals too. The dose is two pills a day.
  • I did a ton of reading on this topic about a month ago, and everything I read says pregnant women should get a minimum of 300 mg per day. I could never find a definitive maximum.

I take Mega DHA (found at health food stores) and it has 500mg per capsule.

  • Fish oils generally have both EPA and DHA, but for pregnant women the real focus is DHA. Most normal fish oil pills have a higher ratio of EPA to DHA, but the ones geared toward pregnant women usually have swapped the Omega 3 ratios. For example, my fish oil pills have 500 mg of DHA and 250 mg of EPA, for a total of 750 mg of Omega 3's per serving. It's tough to find one with a good DHA/EPA ratio, in my experience.

The higher DHA to EPA ratio is beneficial to cognitive functions, while the higher EPA ratio is beneficial to cardiovascular health. So someone who is at risk for say, Alzheimers, would want to take fish oil high in DHA, while someone who has heart disease would look for one higher in EPA. At least this is my understanding of it!
  • Just chiming in with another option, I take ovega supplements, they're vegan algae-based omega supplements with 320mg dha and 130mg epa. My dr cleared them, and no fishy taste!
