1 year old wakes up screaming

My birth month board had no response. Any suggestions?

Back story: Baby was one on March 16. He has been walking and very, very mobile since about 10 months. He has four teeth on the top and four on the bottom. He doesn't talk at all, but knows a few simplified signs and gestures ("bye," blows kiss, waves "all done"). He has never been a good sleeper, sleeps lightly and nervously. We tried snuggly attachment and co-sleeping for a few months and it was awful for everyone. Did progressive leaving, and it helped a bit. Straight up CIO seemed to help a lot, but he is just sensitive. He wakes up when our night shift neighbor comes home, when the dogs' tags jingle, etc. We added a white noise machine and that seemed to help.

Now: Baby has been waking up SCREAMING 4-6 times a night since about Saturday. He has never been a STTN champ, so at first we didn't really notice it. But two times went to three to four to six and we are out of our minds. I'm just so tired. When he awakes it is to straight up screaming, not crying. At first we tried to let him cry for a couple minutes but it gets worse, though I'm not sure how I know this since it seems to start off at an intensity of 10. Last night we did whatever it took: bottle, lie with him, hold and rock. He would go down and then wake after 5-10 minutes and scream again. After a second (or third) round, he would sleep for an hour or two, then back at it. I can see no medical reason for his screaming. We thought maybe he was really hungry, hence the bottle.

He always goes to sleep easily, barely a peep, both at night and at naps. His naps are all over the place, sometimes 1, sometimes 3. If he is not tired, I can't get him to sleep, though, but the second he looks a little drowsy, he will nod right off. He naps for 45 minutes to (at best) 1:45. Yesterday he had one hour and 45 minute nap around noon and then a 30 minute nap about 4pm.

Anyway, any of you going through this? Any of you second time moms have advice? I'm not sure what I'm looking for, but this seemed the place to turn.

  • Maybe teething? We went through a phase like this from 13-14 months. Sorry, I don't really have any suggestions, we ended up moving our DS to a twin bed because he was so upset he started climbing the sides of the crib. We never really figured out what was bothering him but it did pass. Good luck!

  • Is it possible he also could have an ear infection? They do not need to have a fever to have an ear infection. It could also be teething.

  • My first thought was teething. DD got her one -year molars at 13 months and they were pretty painful for her. I swear they feel them before we can see them. I hope you can get some sleep soon.

  • Thanks for the ideas! Wouldn't hurt to have his ears looked at and would give me peace of mind that he is not hurting.

  • we went through something very, very similar with DS when he was around that age, maybe a little older.  turned out his reflux had made a reappearance because we had started him on WCM and his little belly was sensitive to the dairy.  we finally figured it out because he would arch his back as he screamed and then finally after about 10 minutes of screaming, he would beg for water.  after 2 days on zantac we saw vast improvements.  he also broke 2 top teeth shortly thereafter, so i'm guessing it was a combination of the two.  GL

  • Ignoring any medical reasons, have you tried white noise or blackout curtains? I noticed you wrote that LO is a really light sleeper, perhaps if he can't see the car headlights or hear the car, he will sleep through your neighbors' homecoming.

  • In our case it was teething. We gave him half a dose of Tylenol or Advil before bed for the week until the teeth all popped through, and then LO slept fine again.

OP, any update? My first thought was ear infection as well - DS's only symptom of an ear infection is waking up multiple times at night.

  • Teething? My son just turned one and we are in the same boat, not great sleeper up all night screaming. I can feel his molars coming in and the only thing that helps besides ibuprofen is nursing.
