Did you see both heartbeats at the same time? UPDATE

indianaalumindianaalum member
edited April 2014 in Multiples
When I went in at 5 weeks, the U/S showed two gestational sacs but nothing else

This week at 6 weeks, we saw two yolk sacs, but only one had a heartbeat so far.

I am just wondering if anyone else experienced this and still had twins.

U/S said it's not uncommon for one to be a little behind, but also mentioned that it could also mean that one twin could be absorbed.

We should know more by next week. I assume if there is not heartbeat next week, it's not going to happen, right?

When did everyone see heartbeats by?

UPDATE:

I am 8 weeks today and we only saw one heartbeat, so it looks like Embie #2 did not progress pass the yolk sak. We are still very happy and pleases as number one is doing well so far!

  • Yes, this happened to me.  I had bleeding at 6 weeks 3 days and went to the ER.  Only one baby had a heartbeat at this point and they told me the other one didn't make it.  Well, went to the RE at 6 week and 6 days and both had heartbeats and were measuring 2 days a part.  By 9 weeks they were both the same size and when they were born they weighed within an oz of each other.

    Good luck!

  • It could go either way since the heartbeat can be detected starting around 6wks. We saw both at 6wks + a day or two. I'm sorry you're having to wait to find out. Best wishes for a healthy pregnancy!

  • Sending well wishes your way....we were lucky and saw both heartbeats at 6 weeks even...one was a slower than the other. Our RE warned us before beginning that at that early point we may not see them though...so I think it can be common....by the next week, both heartbeats were right on track!

  • At our first ultrasound we just saw one sac and one "possible sac". At the second we saw one heartbeat and they measured the other sac even though it had no hb. At our third we saw both heartbeats. I think that wasn't until almost 8 weeks but i would have to look it up to be sure.
  • I think next week will be the true test. I am not going in until next wed, so alot can change by then

I had an ultrasound around 5 weeks and saw 2 gestational sacs. Next ultrasound shortly after 6wks showed only one heartbeat. The doctor warned us that things could go either way with Baby B. But sure enough, at the next ultrasound just past 7 weeks there were 2 beautiful heartbeats!

6ish weeks is still early for a heartbeat- it's great if you see one, but if you don't it doesn't mean it won't happen. If there's still no heartbeat by 7 weeks, that would be more concerning.

I hope your next ultrasound goes well. Good luck!

  • At just past six weeks we saw the two sacs but only one heartbeat.  Two weeks later everything was right on track.  Like everyone else said, there really isn't any way to know at this point, but I wish you all the best for the next appointment.  I know it's a nerve-wracking two weeks!

  • Good luck to you.  We saw 2 HBs at 7 weeks with our twins.  This time around at 7 weeks I had 2 sacs, but one HB.  I was also bleeding a lot at the time.  Are you bleeding?  Sorry if this is TMI.   T&P to you.

  • At 5 weeks we has one hb and the dr wasn't sure about the other one. The dr said it could just be too early. At 9 weeks we went back 2 strong hbs. T&P to you!
  • No help here since I didn't have an u/s till 10 weeks and we definitely saw both heartbeats. Around 6 weeks is when the heart starts beating I believe so I'd say its probably possible the other hasn't started yet. Good luck!

  • we saw both, but were surprised to find out twins at 9 Weeks! we had had 3 previous u/s that appeared to only show 1 baby and 1 hb...we think one was hiding!

  • At 6 weeks we had 2 empty scas that only measured 5. At 7 weeks we had 2 hbs measuring 6 weeks, so I was a week behind. Not totally unheard of for di/di twins to be off by 1-5 days. We caught up to my weeks but Baby B is always 2-3 days ahead.

  • UPDATE:

Sadly, I went in today and there is still only one heartbeat so it looks like embie #2 did not make it. We are still very excited and embie #1 looks very healthy so far!

  • Congrats on embie #1!

I had my first scan at 7.5 weeks with just one heartbeat and one yolk visible. They said it looked like the second embie "didn't go anywhere".

Second scan at 10.5 weeks showed two little ones with almost identical measurements.

I don't want to give false hope, but my first scan was close in timing to your second. Might be worth asking about another scan in a couple weeks.
  • Wishing you a H&H pregnancy with Baby #1!

  • We had two strong visible and audible heartbeats at 7 weeks and 1 day.  Sometimes you are able to hear it sometimes you don't. Congratulations and glad that you are focusing on the positive of a bright and beautiful baby!
