Sleep patterns for baby

Hey guys! Hoping to read a book on sleep habits for babies just to get an idea of the norms and trouble shooting any issues like nap time etc. I had gotten healthy sleep habits happy child but I just can't get past the first couple chapters at all. Any recommendations?

Oh Oh Oh!  I knew there was another one of these hot button issues we were missing!  Babywise!!!
I just looked this up. The book's description begins with "Theologian Gary Ezzo..." and that's all I need to see. Nothing against religion, I am Catholic and all, but if I want to learn about healthy sleep habits, I am not looking to a theologian.

At least we finally have some brand new topics to hash and rehash as these babies start arriving!

So what you're saying is that when you went and go ogled it you stopped before you got to the words "failure to thrive"?
I was rolling my eyes too hard to notice those words.

...maybe I should be scared to admit that the babywise book has been passed around in my family for like 10 years and they all swear by it? FTR I know nothing about it and just haven't had the time to read it. It has like 4 stars on amazon? someone clue me in on what i'm missing!

  • Go ogle babywise.  The search results will point you very quickly to some vocal opponents of Ezzo and his teachings.
yeah, a few amazon reviews and I'm clued in. I can definitely see why it is so controversial! I will say one thing though, my SIL is the one who gave me the book and claims it did wonders for her kids (now elementary aged) but she prefaced it by telling me not to take everything literally. I can see now why she said that.

  • I don't want to schedule my son, I plan on feeding him on demand not schedule so it's the same idea with sleep but I just want to read something that tells me the average habits like at x months babies tend to take x naps and sleep x hours total just so I have an idea. Also trouble shooting in terms of soothing him and helping him self soothe if necessary. Every baby is different, they each have their own personality and needs but it'd be nice to have a quick reference :)

A friend of mine posted this chart on FB which I thought was handy for tracking approx. schedule shifts.

  • I highly recommend The Baby Whisperer. I read it before DD got here, and she's been a fabulous sleeper for 21 months. We didn't do everything she said (I think twilight feeding is nuts, for example), but the whole "eat, activity, sleep, you" thing worked to keep us from feeding the baby to sleep, and it was good to teach us to put her down sleepy but awake so she learned to put herself to sleep. We are using that method again when this one gets here.

I liked this one as well. I didn't follow it exactly, but it definitely had some helpful tips, and the eat, activity, sleep pattern worked well for us too!

  • I am reading the 90 minute baby sleep program. A friend of mine used it and said it worked great. Of course every child is different so I'm gonna try it and if it isn't working then we will stop.

I got a lot of really helpful tips from online articles and the scheduled baby updates The Bump and BabyCenter emailed to me. I also found lots of cool charts (like total hours of sleep each age group needs per 24 hrs) and articles by Googling issues as they came up. I learned that putting babies to bed late or skipping naps makes them sleep fewer hours and wake up earlier, and exhausted, overstimulated babies sleep less than content, "lazy" babies.
