Trying to Get Pregnant

Those of you with wavy/curly hair...

I have very thick, wavy to curly hair that I used to straighten (or throw into a ponytail) every day for YEARS. I have not touched my straightening iron since December, except to tame my side swept bangs, so my natural texture is really starting to "come back". I love that it takes on a good wave just by letting it air dry. My problem is that it is dry and frizzy. I need to find a light product to rub in while its still wet and then can air dry. I used to use gel or mousse but its too heavy for the soft waves I want to keep.

Any suggestions on a product that might work?

ETA: Also, any shampoo/conditioner recommendations? I have to be careful because my scalp tends to be oily, while the rest of my hair is dry.

  • I am obsessed with Paul Mitchell Smoothing Serum.  I have really thick, wavy hair, and while I do not use this serum daily (ponytails are so much easier), when I do it really helps tame the beast.  I also use deep conditioner regularly which keeps my hair from getting tangled as often.

  • I personally have to use a bucket of gel on my hair to control the curls and frizz, but maybe you could try a styling cream rather than gel or mousse. Devacurl makes one, and I believe Ouidad does as well.

Sorry, I don't have any suggestions. I straighten my hair everyday. I hate my curls, with a passion.
This was me for a long time. I don't know why all of a sudden I am embracing them lol. People used to tell me they were jealous of my thick, curly hair...and I always looked at them like they were nuts!

  • Coconut oil.

I have very long thick naturally curly hair. I've tried all kinda of shit to smooth my curls when I want to wear it curly. I live in south la with 100% humidity most days and I swear sometimes it can look like I have an Afro. I now only use it's a 10 shampoo/conditioner and the keratin leave in, then I put coconut oil on the ends for when I wear it curly. If I wear it straight I put less so it won't look oily.

I use to get keratin treatments and and definitely due for a new one but I can't get them when I'm preg and that seems to keep happening every time I make an appt. Once I learned this trick I'm starting to like my curls again.

  • I use this spray gel:

I have tried many different store products and salon products, and this one is the best at having some hold, not weighing my hair down, and not being sticky or crunchy. I love it. It is a little pricey, but I don't think it is too bad. A bottle probably lasts me at least two months, but probably three or more months. I like their shampoo and deep conditioner also, but that is pretty expensive. I have been using cheap shampoo and conditioner (like Pantene) and just using the deep condition from this line a couple of times a week. If I could justify the expense, I would use their products exclusively.

That's not what I'd call curly hair. I'd kill for that.

This is an old pic but it's of the back of my head. My hair is this curly but now comes down to prob where my dress would be in this pic.

  • I have super curly hair (think Keri Russell's Felicity days).  I recelently went from waist length curls to a pixie cut and here are a few products I like.

Tigi's Curly Sexy Hair curl reactivator It's really light weight and smooths out my frizzy curls

Tigi's Curlesque Amplifier It's a little more heavy control, but is great for high humidity days.  A word of warning though, a little goes a long way.  Too much can leave your hair a little gunky.

Spray-It curly I like this one for light weight control and it's not as pricy as the Tigi products.  My walmart carries it.

Garnier Fructis Sleek & Shine Leave-In Conditioner, 10.2 oz - Dollar General.
I also use this. Then add John Frdiea anti frizz curl perfecting spray and let air dry (I have really curly hair that I have always worn curly)

I have Sara Jessica parker hair like the good sex and the city days, and I use Paul Mitchell crunch free curl definer. It's a light weight cream that I can put it and air dry or blow dry with a diffuser if I'm running late. I also use biolage detangling solution as a conditioner. My curls are a lot better now that I'm not brushing tangles out, now after the shower I just run a thick comb through my hair

Lucky you! I have to spend hours on my hair to get it to look like that! My hair tends to be pretty frizzy and my curls are a lot tighter than that so it looks like this is a good thread for me too!
My hair looks like this after the stylist blows it straight and curls it again :)

I wash my hair with tres semme curl hydration shampoo and conditioner, then I spray with Johnson & Johnson Detangler, then I comb hair, spray gel, scrunch hair into curls.  About 30 - 60 minutes later (while sitting at my desk) I re-scrunch my hair to get rid of the "gel" look

What kind of keratin treatment? I have thick naturally curly hair as well but started getting it chemically straightened last summer. I have done it twice now and I like it, but I do miss my curly hair. I wish I could do an in between, just relax my curls a bit so they look like the picture op posted. These are my curls...So much damn hair. I have Keri Russel hair too.

  • Didn't read all the responses, so this might have already come up.

I condition (with a strong conditioner that is marked for damaged hair, currently using Redken Extreme) from midshaft to tip and shampoo (currently using Redken All Soft) from root to midshaft. I only wash 2x a week and only shampoo the ends 1-2x a month. Only comb/detangle your hair right after it has been washed and use a round brush (without the nubs on the ends of the bristles) to smooth it out. Do NOT brush again (other than running your fingers through it gently to undo tangles and smooth out) between washes unless you have to straighten it. Let it air dry without being pulled back and don't sleep with it wet or damp.

If I do straighten, I use a tiny amount of the hair oil stuff that you're supposed to use before straightening (I use CHI brand or OSIS+ SoftN'Straight) and I only use it from midshaft to tip and then just use the residue left on my hands to smooth out the roots before straightening.

My hair is shiny (in a good way, not greasy) and full and the curls/waves are perfect (most of the time). Any time I've deviated from this routine, my hair gets frizzy and gets split ends and is not shiny. If you are prone to dandruff, use a tiny amount of conditioner on the scalp after shampooing.

Good luck! Sorry if this is kind of all over the place, I kept forgetting parts.

So.....your hair looks like this and you are complaining? Is that for real?  I'd friggin' love if my hair would do that.  I just have naturally frizzy hair.  If I don't blow dry/curl it and let it dry naturally it looks all kinds of bad.
I am not complaining...just trying to make it look less dried out and frizzy. :)

  • @wishiwaspreggo- I actually saw the pillow soft curls on pinterest. I was curious if it actually worked!

@pintobean39- That's what my hair does if I don't do anything (its just frizzy). If I use a product like gel, I get tighter curls but I don't like the crunchy feeling. Also, I have never though to try keratin treatments.... i am definitely going to talk to my stylist! Thanks for the tip!!

@darcyhermione and @maddscientist- I just bought the Garnier because that's all I could find at our walmart (we don't have a super walmart here, just the small regular one). I hope it helps- I will let you know! And Darcy, your hair is very close to the texture of mine..and I love the red!!!

  • I just tried Samy Big Curls and I do like it but I think I may need a serum on top of it. It air dries really nicely with no crunch! image

    @Lomcmuffin‌

Honestly I'm not sure the exact brand but it's not the Brazilian blowout, it didn't work on my hair. My hair dresser does them, it's expensive at $300 but last 6 months. It does straighten my hair out a lot, I have Keri Russel hair too. I still have waves but that's it. It normally takes about 30 min to dry my hair it's so thick and with a keratin it dries in 6 min (I timed it). As the keratin wears out my hair gets curlier but it's soft wavy curls like her picture. They are awesome if you have hair like mine that's very coarse, I finally feel like I have normal hair not horse hair.

    Fucking bump!!!!
  • @pintobean39 Thank you for your coconut oil tip! I'm going to try that.

I love biologue silk infusion serum. I ran out though and have never been able to find it again.
  • Bedhead's Foxy Curls or Catwalk's Curls Rock. I think they are both Tigi's products. The Curls Rock is a little crunchier, but it's also cheaper.
