Have you checked out the Baby Bargains book? I was hell bent on buying stuff from the DaVinci collection and was quite surprised that it didn't get great reviews. We are probably going with a set from IKEA. It got good reviews and it is a fraction of the price (and we'd be able to get more pieces).
I second the Baby Bargains book. We got our dresser (that we'll use as a changing table as well) at IKEA yesterday and will probably get the Graco Lauren crib (Wal Mart, Target and Babies 'R Us all carry it).
According to the Baby Bargains book, the JCP cribs are decent quality--their "C" rating was mostly due to customer service and such. But our friends got theirs there and had no problems!! I would have done it too if they sold the set that I liked in the store and not only online (which had outrageous delivery fees).
We went to Babies R Us and had no problems ordering our crib and changing table. They were a little procey but the crib we got is a 3-in-1 so we'll have it for awhile. And the changing table converts to a bookcase. Good investments is how we saw it.
I read Baby Bargains and they gave them a C. The lower rating was due to poor customer service, the fact that they don't carry baby furniture in the stores and shipping charges, not about quality or durability. I've ordered tons of things online from JCPenney and never had a problem with customer service.

If you're ready to buy, JC Penney is having a pretty big sale right now and I believe they've got free shipping too. I think the sale only runs through tomorrow, though.
I can't speak about the quality of JCP baby furniture, but I did want to mention something about the shipping situation. They do have outrageous shipping fees, but we ordered a regular headboard online and had it shipped to a local store and picked it up. I'm not sure if that's a possibility everywhere, but it's one way we saved a bunch of money.
We plan to order our crib (Baby's Dream brand--got great reviews in
Baby Bargains) from a local children's furniture store. We hope
to find a dresser to match the wood color at IKEA (fingers crossed...)
We got a convertible crib and dresser/changing table combo from BRU. It was a bit pricey, but we figured it would last a while. We opted for the combo because once we're done using it as a changing table, it can just be used as a regular dresser.

We decided to go with the Pali Trieste crib. its a converting crib so it`ll save us $$$ in the long run. Even though we had to order it online and it took a little longer than we had hoped the quality of it made it worth the wait. Plus its beautiful..
We got the Simmons Madisson crib and dresser from Target. Each piece was $299, which I thought was reasonable. It's a 4 in 1 convertible crib...can be used as a crib, toddler bed, day bed and full bed, so we will have it quite a while. Tracking down the conversion kit in the right color (white) from the manufacturer was a bit more of a challenge, but it's arrived finally, no problems. Target didn't carry the conversion pieces in white, so we had to go through the manufacturer.
My parents bought me a crib and changing table from Menards.....Dad worked there and saw them so bought them without asking.......couldn't say no to a nice gesture.
2.5 years later they still look amazing other than the teeth marks on the railing from DD. Will use them both for Baby #2.
If you like them I would say go for it. Expensive doesn't always mean better. But cheaper usually means assembly required.
Re: Where did you get your crib/nursery furniture?
pottery barn kids - pricey, but I hit a sale!
