Trouble TTC

Picking between IUI and IVF with PCOS

After too many cycles to remember of pill combinations, we are going to the injectables. My RE said that she isn't trying to get me to do IVF, but with my PCOS and lots eggs that just don't do anything, she is concerned that I might have too many respond at once and have to cancel. I went in sure I was just doing the injects. But now, my husband and I are considering maybe IVF. Just wanted some opinions. Thanks!

Re: Picking between IUI and IVF with PCOS

  • Yeah, we are all OOP. I was thinking of doing a cycle and seeing how I respond. My husband is convinced that we will have to eventually go to IVF, so he thinks going straight to that would save money. I am a little more hopeful about the IUI, though.

  • I don't have PCOS but I have super stubborn ovaries and tons of follicles. After 2 cycles of trying to get them to respond well with "low and slow" injects I ended up with a few too many follicles all maturing at the same time, both times. And it took 25 and 20 days of injects, with appointments every other day. We semi-cancelled both cycles and went with TI instead of IUI.

I have REALLY great insurance coverage and we were offered IVF as a good option for us right off the bat by my RE. I wasn't emotionally ready but after 2 of these long, uncomfortable, and miserable injects cycles, I with I hadn't spent these months that basically feel wasted.

Long story short: yes, IVF. I know it's not an easy process, but neither is a horrendous IUI cycle.

  • Thanks everyone! I really appreciate it.
  • I think doing one to see how you respond might not be a terrible idea, but I'd probably go straight to IVF. This inject cycle exhausted me and it's a lot to put yourself through for a 15% chance (that's what I was given). When I had my WTF appointment I got the sense my RE would have preferred to move straight to IVF since it wouldn't matter how many mature follicles I had after stimming and to reduce the risk of multiples. My sympathies for all of you who had to stimm for so long, I only did it for 10'days and I was just about to loose it by that last day!

  • I have PCOS and wonderful insurance coverage when it comes to TI. DH and I have decided to try and exhaust the TI option before we give in and go to IVF (even though the doctor says IVF is the best option).

My first cycle I over stimulated and it SUCKED. This cycle though, I did a combination of Femara & Injects (very low dose for 4 days only, my ovaries look like honey combs at the beginning of a cycle) and have been having a very pleasant experience this second cycle.

At the end of the day the decision will come down to finances. Good luck with your decision!

  • I have PCOS as well, i've done IUIs and I have not over responded... yet!  Can I get some wood to knock on?  One cycle I did get a cyst but that is it.  My insurance does cover ultrasounds but not the actual IUI procedure or IVF.  For me the IUI is only $547 so I definitely want to use up that option first because it is such a big price difference.  Good luck with whatever you decide.
    Ba hahahaha!
