Trouble TTC

Anyone do back-to-back IUI's?

Hi All,

So my lovely husband came home and told me tonight that his company is looking at switching insurance carriers but won't know for another week or so. The change would take affect June 1st. We are incredibly fortunate to live in CT where they cover 3 IUI's (lifetime maximum).

We have been taking a self prescribed break to just get as healthy as we can be, our RE isn't concerned with our health just wants my weight down a bit for IVF. We did one IUI in Jan and it was a BFN. We have been diagnosed with MFI and basically told that with my husbands numbers we are looking at IVF but once I get my weight down a bit.

However, now with the insurance change over, I am considering doing a IUI in May which I know my RE will support, because he doesn't think that we need to stop doing IUI's. But since the insurance will possibly be changed, I am curious about back-to-back IUI's so I don't waste a free insurance covered IUI if the insurance ends up changing to a new carrier. I have never asked about them and I will give my RE's office a call but I wanted to see if you any of you have done them. I know nothing about them, like does it happen during the same day or different days, do they freeze his sample or just get another one? Any thoughts?

Thanks so much!

I have had two back to back IUI's and one single IUI (because I ovulated before the first one).    My RE plans back to backs as normal protocol, so I do my first one about 24 hours after triggering and the 2nd one between 44 and 48 hours after trigger (so the next day).  I don't think this is all that common in the states, but it seems to be common in some other countries.  Honestly, if you have two IUI's left on your insurance and will 'lose' one if you don't use it, then I would go for it.  If you could use the last one on a different cycle, I would save it because I don't think back to backs raise your chances that much.

ETA:  Oh, and my husband has to go in both days to give fresh samples.  It's a pain because of work, but my husband is all for anything that gives him the chance to watch porn, even if it is in a doctor's office!

    Good luck with your decision!

  • My clinic's practice is to do B2B IUIs.  Similar to PP, I trigger one morning, then have the first IUI 24 hrs later, then the second one the following morning, so about 48 hrs after trigger.  H goes in with me to provide a fresh sample both days.

This is what I've found while looking into the stats on B2B IUIs.  From all that I've read/heard, it does increase your chances but not by all that much.  Good luck!
