MeaganStringer - itching - CALL OB

@MeaganStringer - I didn't want my response in the other post to go unnoticed.

You need to call your OB right away about the itching.  It sounds like cholestasis (aka ICP) and it is VERY serious.  They will need to run blood tests to confirm but I've had two good friends who were diagnosed with it this year.  If that's what it is, they'll induce you early (probably right at 37 weeks).  Do not wait!

  • I'm a sucker for Dr. google and I worry all the time. In fact my dr laughed at me when I told her I thought I had that. But i said I wasn't leaving until she tested me. My worry is I know the levels can very, so if this one is normal also do I just accept the results and worry about the possibility of losing my child for three weeks? I just don't know what to do.

wondering the same. I was given Vistaril to help with the itching, but it didn't do anything except give me cotton mouth. I have to sit on my hands all day or I would tear them open and I wake up at night bleeding from scratching my legs (probably because I can't reach my feet!). All my OB has said is to keep an eye on LO's movement and if I notice anything abnormal to go straight to L&D, but of course this makes me even more paranoid and I second guess her movements all day.

  • Have your doctors ruled out PUPPPs? I developed it with my first pregnancy and again with this one.  I was tested for Cholestasis because I only get the itching.  I don't actually get a visible rash, well I can see it in places but it is nothing like Dr. Google shows.

The only thing that helps is a steroid dose pack.  With my first pregnancy I did a dose pack at 28 weeks, 34 weeks and then I was induced at 38.5 weeks.  This pregnancy I managed to hold out with just creams and benadryl until yesterday when I started my first dose pack.

  • Well Dr Google shows that women have a 0.002% chance of getting it.
Also other symptoms include dark urine, pain on the right side of the abdomen/ rib cage area, yellowing of the skin and sclera (eyes) and severe nausea.

If your only symptom is itching, and your test are normal. I would not worry. Your bilirubin and liver enzymes would raise and then you would have itching, not the other way around.
not necessarily. My OB said if my itching doesn't get better she will keep re testing because it can take a while for the increased bile acid levels to show up.

  • I was extremely itchy and would scratch at night until I bled. Eczema is very common in pregnant women, I ended up lathering myself with Aveeno Eczema cream and using their oatmeal bath mix a few times. My skin has healed up and the itching has gotten better, I still use it on my legs all the time and so far haven't gotten itchy.

It's very important to continue getting checked out - and of course don't take my opinion/advice over a doctors - but it might be worth a shot to get some sweet relief.

  • I think the reason I continue to worry is because my itching is concentrated to my hands and feet, only. Oatmeal baths and aveeno products made it 10x worse. If I had itching all over or even a rash to go with it I would worry less. But because the risk associated with cholestasis is stillbirth, I'm going to be as proactive as I possibly can.

  • My itching is from head to toe, but it is extremely bad on my palms and feet. I've tried the oatmeal baths , they made it worse. I get about a 20 min relief from the aveeno eczema lotion. (When I say relief I mean I don't feel like cutting off my hands and feet.) I have no sign of a rash or bumps on my skin. It's just the itch.

I agree with cbrust. Since the risk is stillbirth it's not something I would like to chance. If my results come back normal again, I will speak to my ob about how I should monitor my baby. I will deal with the itching as long as my child is healthy. My only worry is she isn't very active (that's just how she is) so not feeling her for hours at a time is normal for me. Monitoring off of movement will be hard for me.
