Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Feel like I am backtracking

For the past week, LO has been unhappy, to say the least. She will only nap in someone's arms and if I try to put her in her bassinet or crib, it's like the world has ended, From about 5:30p-8p, we have to be walking around otherwise she gets REALLY fussy. She does have a 2-hour stint in the morning and early afternoon where she will play and be sweet, but it is really difficylt the rest of the time. What happened to my sweet, content baby? Up until last week, she would sleep 2-3 hours in a row at night, in her bassinet. Last week it turned into an hour. I was exhausted last night so just let her cosleep with us and she had 2- 4.5 hour long sleeping sessions. It was heavenly. It is not ideal for her to sleep with us, but I can't do too many more days of not sleeping.

Anyone else going thru a hard time? Advice? Is this just a normal thing? The only thing I have changed in the last week is we were bottle feeding, but are now back to breast feeding (she finally got the latch down). Other than that, same routine. Since DH gets home at 5p, (start of peak fussy time), he is starting to thinkthat she hates him,

Re: Feel like I am backtracking

  • How old is your LO? My daughter did the same thing around 4-6 weeks. We always tried to start her in her bassinet, but she ended up in our bed because she slept better and longer. Around 7 weeks, she started sleeping longer stretches and in her bassinet. We do put a heating pad in the bassinet when I feed her so her bed is warm when she goes in. We take the heating pad out first of course! We also have white noise playing loud which seems to help keep her sleeping. Hopefully this is just a phase for you. Good luck!

  • She is 6 weeks now, and I've heard that 5-7 weeks is a stressful time, so hoping that's just what this is. Good idea about the heating pad

  • do you have a bouncer/swing? my DS who is 5 weeks old will only sleep in that, it vibrates, swings and has a white noise maker, he loves to sleep in our arms and in bed with me, but like you i needed some sanity and sleep, so we started putting him in there and he loves it, i just bring it close to the bed while we sleep.

  • It's very normal for a baby her age to have a "witching hour" in the evenings. Our LO was always the fussiest during the 3-4 hours before bedtime. DH and I would camp out on the couch and pass him back and forth -- me feeding him, DH doing diaper changes -- it does get better!

There's also a six week growth spurt that she is probably hitting.

  • Does she have acid reflux/tummy trouble? She could be uncomfortable while sleeping.
  • We go back to the doc soon for her 2-month check up, and I'll ask about the reflux issue.
